Bill Porter has been a friend for years and years. He still does coin shows in the DC area and has been known to leak very nice coins from his personal collection. He is also a major collector of Coke bottles and has written a (now out of print) book on the subject. Below is the most recent coin I have purchased from him.

He also was the dealer who had a coin in his stock marked, "25 cents to you if you take it." I really wish I had kept that coin so I could show my cheapest coin.

I'd like to share a memory of Tom Cederlind

    PLEASE ENTER ME

Tom Cederlind was a kind gentleman who I was privileged to call a friend. I met him on ebay when I was first starting to collect ancients, and we fell into a regular correspondence which I enjoyed very much. I was always impressed by the depth of his knowledge, and he helped me build my Greek silver collection, and later got me interested in collecting ancient women.

Tom was a regular at the Summer FUN shows, and always had time to talk. Even though my coin budget was minimal, every show he would bring something special for me, such as an affordable aVF Didia Clara or a Julia Titi:)

    I miss him.

Tom was my best friend in the business. I have many stories as I knew him since the 1980's. His knowledge was indeed encyclopedic (thought he did often embellish stories from history!). If I remember right his college degree specialized in I think 4th or 5th Century Roman history.

Random thoughts: I remember one night, dinner and drinks later with Tom, Mike, the Freemans (I cant remember who else was there, maybe Berk and Victor), in San Francisco at what I termed the 'boobie bar'. No, not what you think, it was a dive bar with bizarre light fixtures all over the ceiling which resembled breasts.

    Good times!

For the most part I've been lurking, but it's a great contest so I couldn't resist! PLEASE ENTER ME!!

How do you say sestertius? I had trouble with the pronunciation :wacky: so I asked @ancientcoinguru and a dealer at the ANA national show last month.

    Here's how you say it:
Sestertius (singular) - se-stur-shuh s (that's what they told me)

    Sestertii (plural) - se-stur-shee-ahy
-I'm pulling this from dictionary.com so if anyone has a different pronunciation
    for this please tell me!

Sesterce (RR silver form) - ses-turs
    -again from dictionary.com

If I'm missing anything please let me know. Great contest, thanks for doing this Aethelred!

Pronunciation warrants a separate thread entirely! It is highly debatable and the bottom line is that nobody knows. I have always said pronounce it any way you like, others will likely know what you mean.

I will be selecting two winners tomorrow (if all goes according to plan), so if you are interested in the giveaway there is still time to enter, but not much!

I never had the pleasure of doing business with Tom Cederlind, though I very nearly pulled the trigger on a lovely Roman Republican denarius he had in his VCoins store. There were several times I had one of his coins in my "watch list". I'm sorry to have missed the opportunity to "meet" him.
