[QUOTE="dougsmit, post: 3633196, member: 19463"]May I suggest those in this situation with these fears consider the fact that several regular contributors here sell coins and are a bit less likely to treat you poorly than the average unknown seller. John Anthony and Severus Alexander run periodic auctions including beginner level coins. Ken Dorney is a full service dealer and has been considered trustworthy for half of his life (I did not become aware of him until a couple decades ago but I suspect he was a good kid, too). Valentinian has been a friend and coin source for a similar period. I know there are others and those who read a lot of posts will know whom they want to contact and who is to be avoided. You might even get guidance from them as to where/what to start.

I regret the current trend for new collectors jumping into the deep end and buying EF 12 Caesars sets as a first purchase. There is nothing wrong with starting with a slightly worn Trajan and working your way gradually from the kiddie pool to the 10 meter platform. Starting out buying blindly is altogether unnecessary and --- to use a bad word --- stupid. If you must buy 12 Caesars gold, hire a professional to represent you. If you find beauty in the Trajan, use the resources here on CT (including Conversations).
