I collect Mint and Proof sets in original packaging only, go back when I was a kid in early fifties. Those older ones were really crappy, plain cardboard boxes and plain paper envelopes campared to now-a-days. I don't really care what happens to the appearence of them during the natural course of aging, the paper gets yellow the cardboard turns and the coins tone. I believe the original packaging holds more value than taking the coins out to put in holders. Fifty years from now, 100yrs, what's gonna be worth more? Thanks, Douglas

    to u.s. mint

i hope the mint will use plastic case instead of currrent clear folder for uncirculated set. so that all three types of sets will be uniform. proof set, silver proof set and mint unc set.

also change the size of plastic case to a little bigger. so that the hole can fit the coin with a capsule on it. then it won't have a problem to tone easily and become reddish color. before the coin insert directly to the cardboard hole. enlarge the hole so that coin with capsule can fit in. the int can charge us a little bit higher. it doesn't matter regarding a higher price. as long as it can protect the coins.

    it is time to change

the mint should change the clear plastic for uncirculated set to plastic case like proof set. we can even open it up to see or to check the coins.

    foreign sets

most foreign sets were much beautiful packaging than the u.s.mint sets. the reasons might be foreign sets were much fewer than u.s. and the cost of labor and materials were cheaper to make i guess. but hopefully, the u.s. mint will follow them.

Hi! Are the recent us mint uncirculated sets hermetically sealed in the cello packages? I am considering starting a collection of these in original packaging. I know many of my proofs and prestige sets are showing signs of toning and am wondering if the unc mint sets do the same.
    Thanks.

i think so. every sets might be contaminated unless they were property keep and with protection like silica gel. what kind we do?. that is why set without tone should command a premium and also those with beautiful toning too.

Most foreign sets are also much more expensive to purchase from the mint than our sets are. Example, most Euro Mint sets with one coin Euro cent through 2 Euro, 8 coins exchange rate face value about $6 cost $28 to $30. Same percentage mark up over face for a US mint set should make it cost $60. Some foreign sets are a lot more expensive than that example.

to say that if the u.s. mint upgrade its standard and charges higher. still we will buy them....

If we do we are fools. Same coins, fancier box, three times the money to buy, same price in the aftermarket as currently.

    not really

i am after the nice box and certificate. not to say, it should be original things come out directly from the u.s. mint. no dealers involve.
