Not only that but any manufactured product can and usually is made to different statistics. This is due to a method of protection for a proprietary manufacturing process or those products would be extensively copied and not much chance of a product becoming successful. Some even add items of no importance and of no effect just to confuse the enemy.
Meanwhile back to the original poster of this post. Try to remember that what you may consider being preached at was in reality just some individuals OPINIONS. If you stick around here you would notice that this is a common commodity when your in a discussion with numerous individuals from all walks of life in all parts of the world. Everyone that attempts to give thier OPINION on cleaning coins may state it in mild to harsh sounding tones but since you can not really see thier faces, nor hear how loud or soft they are speaking, you don't know just how they may have really ment what they mentioned. Also, try to remember that not all stated OPINIONS are actually based on first hand knowledge and is only a repeat of what they have heard, read, imagined, etc. Then too, there are numerous individuals on this forum of extensively vast information on coins and that too should be noted although it is not easily detected at all times. To sum it up, stick around and join in.
My dirty peace dollar I don't know anything about coins, but having read the forum I understand that one should never clean their coins in any way. However, I have a silver dollar I carry in my pocket. I use it to show people what real money is. I bought it as junk, but it's not that bad, 1923 S. I left it in my jeans and washed them. I heard a nasty noise from the dryer, and I retrieved my dollar and guess what? It looks much better! I consider the dollar to still be in circulation, since I carry it, and what happened to it is just a normal consequence of a coin being in circulation. Am I correct? I may swap dollars and try it on another one.
Well, that's a common thing to coins in circulation. It's not a piece you bought for a collection. You bought it for bullion. So by all means do what ever to it. Granted doing so drives down it's collectors value so chances are it will never be worth more than it's silver content. Plus side Silvers almost back up to $13.
