@Pishpash May I have your permission to post the "before" image of your coin in another thread or two? That should allow me to rectify all my misconceptions about it. Hope you say OK. Of course I'll let you know where I post the photo with the question: "What do you think about this coin?"
I owe posting my coin that YOC cleaned for me. I have been traveling this past week, and have not gotten to it. He did an EXCELLENT job cleaning. It has a dramatic before and after look. I promised to post it for him, and will soon. Meanwhile, I am still shaking off the road-dust from my travels.
i'm not sure how yoc cleans the coins, but i bet it looks something like this.... seriously, if it isn't magic, it's even more amazing!
You're more than welcome to use any of these (I had these done by the other person who uses this method). And I can assure your 'inquisitive' mind that there is nothing wrong with these coins.
Like many others here, I am getting tired of your confrontational posts. You only have a voice if people hear you.... after this post I will be ignoring any and all of your content. This is a forum of 'friends' and when we have done or seen something first hand then we tell others and they take our word. The most expert member regarding this subject (not me) has already posted and you have chosen to ignore their input. You use strong words, which would be ok if you had formed an educated opinion by listening to what others have told you as well as your 'knowledge' on the subject, but you throw them around carelessly without reading what anyone else here has said. From the input you have had so far, I would politely choose to discard your opinions as speculative and ill informed. You use words such as corrosion , but again you havent really listened to what you have been told. You add winks to your posts as though we have some shared secret or knowledge concerning the cleaning of this coin..... we do not. I'll say it again...Genius? no. No more so than when a child washes mud from their boots. Thats all I did. Nothing was plated. No filling was done. You didnt see the silvering in the before photo. I didnt see it on the coin in hand before I cleaned it either, but it was a nice sight when it appeared from under the verdigris. If you have never seen this, then I suggest you bow to my superior knowledge on the subject as I have no need to lie to anyone on this forum. As for your requests to post elsewhere and call in 'chemists', I hope Pish says no, but she probably has not seen your request for obvious reasons. This thread was started because Pish was pleased with her coin and the results, not because she wanted opinions on whether the coin was doctored or fraudulently altered. That was something which you decided to start. Something which is not in the spirit of this forum.
THANKS so much, and I agree with you! I also feel compelled to praise your open mind and hold your actions out as an example of what all of us here should be like. Unfortunately, the original state of your coins does not approach the corroded condition of the other example from @Pishpash. This persons work is excellent also but he had much better coins to start with. Even I have done comparable work with similar results. Although any one can claim anything in this forum, you'll need to trust me on that as I have nothing here to post for proof. Additionally, I'll bet with less that a day's search at your computer, you'll be able to do your own conservation on coins like you have shown. IMO, @YOC is one of the best practicing "coin doctors" around. May he live a long and prosperous life and restore many thousands of coins.
i AM REALLY SORRY THAT I DID NOT READ THIS POST FIRST BEFORE ANSWERING MY MORNING ALERTS. I tend to take things in order. Although the outcome of your work is amazing (I tried my best to prove it was not the same coin ), I'm really sorry to read your post and what you had to say. Consequently, I just chose to quickly skim it as you got your point across real quick. I will go back to it as I wish to reply directly to your statements for any other member to see. This forum may be a group of long-time friends who enjoy showing off their NEWPS but it is also one about sharing THE OBVIOUS. You have succeeded in turning a EDIT into a beautiful coin. It is too bad you cannot share your method. I've had a little experience examining the surfaces of coins in every condition you can imagine [since you insist] while looking for counterfeits and chemical or mechanical alterations done to to all types of coins from all eras and countries. That said, you are a genius! Nevertheless, the tone of you post and the fact that you wish to shut-down any further discussion makes me wonder what you are hiding and why you have become defensive. @tbc has shown me and all of you here what numismatic inquiry and discussion is all about. You @YOC can learn from him. Until I return to this thread again, the GREEN & RED deposits on copper and bronze is ACTIVE CORROSION or BD!
I have ignored the Troll now for a while. It is sad that so much bad Karma results from it. A sad individual whose only joy in life is to torment others for its own pleasure... What a waste of Life. Kindness and thoughtfulness creates MUCH more results in our short lives... @YOC I love the work you did on MY coin! Great job!!!
this thread got me thinking about this coin i have.... the thick verdigris that obscures details of the coin is kind of annoying on this LRB. ive used verdi-care on it, and poked at it with a needle/toothpick some, but that's about as aggressive as i'm comfortable getting. with more "hardcore" mechanical methods i'm scared i'm going to lift up a chunk of green and hit metal or scrape the coin. anyone have any shareable advice for what to do with this coin? my advice to myself was..."that's enough, just leave it alone". the white line on the cheek is a hair from my dog! lol! didn't notice that.
I think my Severina would be a good candidate. It isn't as bad as other examples, but it does have some adhesions and I see plenty of silvering under it. It's also more green then the pic shows in the fields, which looks white.
This is the same "easy" conservation all have shown on the thread: "Great Gobs of Green Gook." I'm sure all the posters there who are NOT "sworn to secrecy" will share their chemical soak. I wish I could help but I've signed a confidentiality agreement and I'm sworn to secrecy too. You have done the right thing so far. While VC is a good product, I have found that it is best reserved for protecting the finished coin AFTER conservation.
Is today Halloween and I missed it?? Ok guys, Ignore who you wish and remember no one should feel obligate to give any information others wish unless you desire to do so. We all have confidentiality agreements, as to methods and money, so live with it. Badgering for answers just irritates rather than getting results. If you ask once and get no answer, why continue except to irritate, and that may bring unexpected rewards. Boo.
@Insider can provoke strong feelings. He is sometimes insensitive in the way he says stuff, but he usually has good points. Ignore him if you wish, but he is no more abrasive than many posters. Posters in the Ancient Forum are much more polite than any other forum on CT. Now with that said, I think @YOC has done an excellent job. Sorry he called you a genius, I really don't think he was being abusive. Now as to the coin, whatever you did to remove the corrosion was very effective, however I do see damage from the corrosion on the cheek area and just in front of the nose. Don't get me wrong, the job is great and needed to be done. As far as the silvering, corrosion can grow over a silver plating like grass grows over the edge of a walk...remove the grass and the walk is still there. One final thing, many ancient coins were silvered, and I have wondered if the silvering were done in modern times, could it be detected?
In response to your points ...... In my opinion, He is always insensitive He has made no good points in this thread, only unfounded accusations about fraudulent acts. He is being ignored. He is far more abrasive than the majority of posters on this forum. Please dont apologise on his behalf for calling me a genius, it is not your place to do so. I dont need insults buttered up with half hearted compliments from his sort. He called me a genius for 'filling, fraudulently altering and plating a coin', but has no basis for these accusations, which affect my reputation as a coin cleaner and seller. If he continues down this avenue, I will take appropriate recourse. However you do see corrosion on the cheek area? The coin has some minor corrosion evident on the cheek area.... this is true, but I fail to see your point? It was not corrosion growing over the silvering, but deposits resulting from copper oxides leaching onto this coin from others which were in close vicinity. The corrosion in front of the nose was acting within this coin under the silvering.... read cbd 's post. I am a little sick that the moderators have not spotted the manner of virtually all of the members posts...... It is of no coincidence that the majority of his posts are intended to annoy, upset, or cause conflict. This forum was enjoyable until about 2 months ago, when this sort of behaviour crept in under the radar....
@YOC That is amazing work on that coin! It looks terrific! As someone who likes to buy coins that show promise that others miss... I appreciate the skill and patience it takes to get that kind of result. Congrats. I have a recent Commodus purchase that I think has some promise but some stubborn dirt that I'd like to get board opinions on, I hope to get your feedback! Not anything about your particular process but "try this!" Would be awesome. I'll post it soon in another thread. Don't let someone disrupt your enjoyment and participation in this great discussion place.
He is far more abrasive than the majority of posters on this forum. More than the majority perhaps, but far from the worst. However you do see corrosion on the cheek area? The coin has some minor corrosion evident on the cheek area.... this is true, but I fail to see your point? Close, I said I saw some damage in the cheek area and in front of the nose that came from removal of the corrosion. Just pointing out, as has been pointed out many times before that really bad corrosion on a coin will cause damage to the underlying material that becomes evident when the corrosion is removed. It was not corrosion growing over the silvering, but deposits resulting from copper oxides leaching onto this coin from others which were in close vicinity. The corrosion in front of the nose was acting within this coin under the silvering.... read cbd 's post. Agree that the damage I pointed out was due to corrosion on the coin that was removed, however, corrosion is corrosion whether it comes from the coin or from others in it's vicinity. Still an excellent job of cleaning/conserving.
I have to respectfully disagree. I've been posting here for quite some time, and have never before used the "Ignore" feature. Every once in a while we get someone on the forum who can be nasty, but they don't stay long. In this case and in my opinion this one has overstayed his welcome.
