I bought this a while ago and I asked YOC if he would give it his secret treatment. This is what I sent him.... And this is what he sent me back.... Carinus (Caesar) Coin: Bronze Antoninianus M AVR CARINVS NOB C - radiate, draped and cuirassed bust facing right. Seen from the front PRINCIPI IV-VENTVT - Carinus, standing, facing left, holding the Globe with his right hand and a Sceptre with his left. A captive Barbarian at lower left. Exergue: Mint: Ticinum (282-283 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 3.38g / 22mm / - References: RIC V, II 181 Notes: Oct 28, 16 - Officina: Fourth (Q) Much of the silvering remains.
I'm impressed as well. I could use that secret treatment on a few of my coins. Really nice finish job.
Other than the slab, what's wrong with that one? The toning? Mike (can I call you Mike?) put the beer down.
I never would have guess that was possible, OP. Do the surfaces look like they have been worked on? Do they show unnatural roughness or corrosion spots? It is hard to tell in the picture.
Well...I was going off his profile picture Off Topic: @Bing have you ever had soju? Apparently you can see all kinds of things you'll never remember. Been there...
Yes, I've had soju when I was in Korea. But, let me tell you about a drink called Pálinka in Romania............
@Michael Clarke There is absolutely nothing wrong with that coin except that it is in a slab. Whilst I dislike slabs, it might be safer in there.
Although I think that YOC did a fine job on not ruining your coin, I loved your original multicoloured dream coin => oh, but awesome job at cleaning the coin, YOC
@YOC I consider you a genius - VERY AMAZING WORK! I hope you are working in a museum and that you have made a notebook or video of your methods so they will not be lost to posterity. Question? Not as a condemnation but as a subject of discussion: 1. How long did it take? 2. Does anyone here think this coin has been "fraudulently altered." If not - why? If yes - why? 3. How did the color of the coin go from brown to silver? If it is plated, is this considered a "fraudulently altered" coin?
It is hard to photograph, and I am not good with the camera. I used the best lighting to illuminate the coin. The coin bronze with a coating of silver. YOC has managed to retain a lot of the silvering. In daylight it looks a little patchy but if you tilt the coin you see what is in the above picture.
