I tried the baking soda/foil/hot water method and it didn't work.

I'm not looking for "validation", I'm just sharing my experience. Don't take life so seriously.

The coins are worth the same now as they were before you soaked them. They were worth melt then and still worth melt...so I wouldn't worry. Clearly, you know that these coins don't have collector value so what's the harm in playing with them.

As for Buffalo Nickels, I don't think it's "bad." Dateless Buffalo's are as worthless as a Buffalo Nickel can be, if you want to soak them to bring out the date go ahead. I would put a little drop right where the date was and let it sit though...I think you get a more attractive result. If you soak the whole coin, you will get a acid etched look over the whole coin. But again, I don't think you will hurt the value...so I don't think it's "bad."

Didn't anybody ever tell you that you shouldn't clean your coins?

BTW, here is what a mint state Washington Quarter looks like.

Feel free to compare your cleaned dreck to see the difference.

I've been told not to do a lot of things but it never stopped me from doing them.

These quarters were horrible looking, but now they are presentable. I'm happy with them and I don't really care what you think.

I highly doubt there were many who did not recognize a few obviously trashed 1940's quarters as anything but.

No and no. The problem is not failing to recognize Bugo's right to trash, clean, destroy, etc, etc his coins, but is the same as in the grill cleaner and negativity threads. It's not the so-called "purists" being offended by his choices, or that anyone really cares what he does. Had he simply made it clear that his "methods" are damaging, regardless of the fact he's only using them on junk, I doubt that any of this would be an issue, but saying things such as it turned coins in "terrible shape" into being "presentable", or "most of the corrosion was gone", or that the "improvement is staggering" could send mixed signals. This should not be that hard to understand.

If one wishes to clean their junk, there are better ways than implying this "method" turned under $4 quarters into $20 uncs.

Not bad, when you have really awful looking coins, improving the appearance is no sin. They really aren't MS coins, they are worn and only look white because you stripped them. If you really want them shiny, use some silver polish. If someone wanted a specimen of a silver quarter, they would probably pay more for your after than your before. Collectors here go for much higher grade coins. Acetone might have removed the gunk without damaging the surface like the acetic acid. Enjoy clanking them in your pocket for a few years and post them here again for complements on the toning. : - )

You should take that back. rickmp has a heart of gold. He donates half his salary to war orphans.

I warned the anal coingeeks not to even read the message. I didn't ask what he thought about the quarters. But he made a rude statement anyways.

I donate 3/4 of my salary to AIDS babies and 1/8 to the humane society. So there.

And resurrecting a dead thread for apparently no other purpose than saying this is being nice? I seem to recall another thread in which you made a number of ridiculous accusations that were far less nice than what Rick or anyone else has said to you, so perhaps it's time to either let it go or take a long look in the mirror before pointing fingers.

    Point proven.

He made a rude comment and *I*'m the bad guy? LOL!

I've never once criticized anybody's coins on this forum. I believe there is room for all coins in the hobby, including coins with patina and wear and yes, even cleaned coins. I turned some nasty looking quarters that a novice wouldn't even know had been cleaned. I'm not out to impress the anal coingeeks. The reason I started this thread was just to show that vinegar can work wonders on rusty coins. I love my quarters. Why is it so hard for you to accept that? All coins can't be MS 70, you know.

Not the "bad guy", but somewhat misguided perhaps. It seems as if you're more concerned with viewing reasonable and well-meaning posts by others as being rude while ignoring the fact that (some of) your own are just that and then some.
