Hello! I'm new to these forums and I decided to register so I could join in on the conversation.

Well I have a rather large wheat and Indian head penny collection. I collect pennies because it is interesting to me to have something in my possession that has seen 100+ years of history. And in no way would I call my self a professional collector, though I do know more about my pennies than the average person does. Anyway I have used a copper polish I found in my basement to clean a few of them just so I could make them shiny and pretty to show friends, I'm not in it for the money I just collect them. And as far as I can tell the polish hasn't done any damage to the coins. I have not seen a uncirculated IHP in real life so I can only compare it to New Pennies (I am aware that they are made from different metals) and wheaties that are in good condition. The Pennies I have cleaned with the polish do look very good in comparison to other non cleaned coins that are already in good condition. I experimented with other common house hold cleaners I found around the house and chemicals used for cleaning rust do a wonderful job with 1943 steel pennies. I had a Steel penny that was absolutely covered in rust. To remove the rust I placed it in a cup that had CLR in it over night and when I pulled it out the rust completely vanished. I also placed a 1907 IHP in the CLR (The coin was already worthless and in bad shape) and sure enough it ate away at it destroying the penny.

From my little experience I can say that even though cleaning may make the coin worth less money it can if done correctly make it look very nice. The people I have shown my cleaned pennies to have been impressed by it. And if you are like me and collect coins for reasons other than potentially making money cleaning an old coin could be rewarding.

If you are unlike me and want to make money off old coins then Do Not Clean Them!
