There are a dozen posts in the 1st few pages of new people looking for advice on online auctions. When ebay is mentioned, it is either "avoid" or "be careful because you'll have to sift through a ton of crap". It is listings like yours we are referring to.

Since I do not collect coins for investment purposes, I'm interested in the appearance of the coin, not the slab. If it is not too harshly cleaned, then I will purchase it (at a reduced price from what is being asked). More times than not, the seller will agree since he may not sell it otherwise. I do agree that cleaning is stupid because it usually always affects the appearance of the coin due to the tell-tale striations. Soaking in distilled water or acetone is the way to go if you want to get rid of surface dirt, etc. Love the history of coins, try not to deface them. It's almost sacreligeous.

    1) If you want to post links to your own auctions, use the For Sale forum.

    2) I don't see anything in your title or description about the coin being cleaned or polished. I know how to tell that it's damaged, even from poor photos, but you're trolling for uninformed buyers who don't.

Sorry, finding it hard to take up your side here.

You know it is bad to clean coins. Yet you do so anyway. There can only be one explanation: you are intentionally doing it with the hope that someone will *think* it is worth more than it actually is since you use crap photos and don’t describe that you clean your coins. That is not what the coin is worth; it is what an uniformed buyer assumed it was worth because he/she was mislead by a SCAMMER.

“Fraud is generally defined in the law as an intentional misrepresentation of material existing fact made by one person to another with knowledge of its falsity and for the purpose of inducing the other person to act, and upon which the other person relies with resulting injury or damage. Fraud may also be made by an omission or purposeful failure to state material facts, which nondisclosure makes other statements misleading.

To constitute fraud, a misrepresentation or omission must also relate to an 'existing fact', not a promise to do something in the future, unless the person who made the promise did so without any present intent to perform it or with a positive intent not to perform it.”

    https://definitions.uslegal.com/f/fraud/

@Jerame Lawson above is the legal definition of fraud. Multiple times you have stated that you clean the coins yourself (establishes intent) and you have posted links to your auctions which show a blatant failure to describe that they are cleaned (establishes omission). You, sir, have committed fraud. Keep it up and you will have much more to worry about in the future.

If it is the seller I am thinking of, he juices his photos and lies about the depth of the mirrors. People fall for it. It is arguably fraud as well. However, that seller DOES NOT INTENTIONALLY CLEAN HIS COINS TO INCREASE RESALE VALUE LIKE YOU ARE CLAIMING TO DO.

Cleaning coins is not illegal. Intentionally omitting the fact that you cleaned them when selling with the intent of boosting resale value is the very definition of fraud. Sorry.
