one has to look at actual sold items. The mighty bay there are folks who ask high retail for cleaned coins. If there selling at that level is anyone's guess. Cleaned and otherwise damaged coins often do have value and a place. Many times a nice lightly cleaned coin will be great in an album and time will often minimize the effect. The value though is profoundly effected the more the damage is strong hairlines will place many morgans at bullion levels for example. There is perspective involved as well.

It is probably a problem-free AU, and the seller is intentionally using deceptive pics to make it look nicer than it actually is. The buyer is going to be surprised.

This hardly fits into your claim that cleaned/AT coins go for significantly more than problem-free coins.

    Try again.

I thought it was just cleaned/uncleaned ..that coin is a fine example of chemistry at work-- you should check out all the common coins with these crazy chemistry projects...I took 300 of my coins to three different shops and virtually got a couple dollars over melt value...reminds me of the baseballcard scam which burnt me bad...so now I clean and polish all mine and get 3 times over what there actually worth on eBay...point is people pay big money for cleaned polished or artificially crazy toned coins...just my opinion and that brings me so much more money...just saying cleaned and polished to a brilliant luster or chemically induced to create black mirrors are crushing it on eBay..,.

I believe the aged post #11 answers the O.P. question: "I think the thing to remember is when you're trying to sell to a dealer, a cleaned coin is worth nothing more than melt. When that same dealer turns around to sell it, it's lightly cleaned with tons of eye appeal left."

I was doing a grading study within the last couple years to determine if the "premier" TPG were still grading as shown in a past study, (posted in a prominent Numismatic magazine). I found when removing high value graded Gold coins from the 4 top TPG slabs, and resubmitting to the premier 2, the coins frequently would be returned as "detailed". Frustrated, I offered, at "spot", some of the coins to a very prominent dealer whom I was purchasing from. He was very receptive to purchase anything slabbed by the premier TPG, listing that type of slab with his graded coins at virtually the same pricing.

I eventually decided resubmitting slabbed coins was folly, as reported in this venue. I sold the majority of detailed "scarce" (e.g. Type I $20s) returned coins to a long term acquainted dealer at spot. I learned the gamblers lesson of resubmitting and now just purchase under-graded slabs, and submit to CAC, where value isn't diminished, but possibly advanced.

The lesson is to buy whatever pleases you, and possibly reap rewards, or just enjoy. I'm selling some treasures, as slabbed, with the market adjustment of Gold products pricing. I have some beautiful "detailed" (e.g. "scratched/cleaned") Gold coins that will be sold for possible re-submission to a lucky buyer.

Did you just express outrage about dealers polishing coins and selling them raw for big bucks, then say you're doing the same thing?

I absolutely love your post thanks for the insight and great information-- needless to say I enjoyed collecting over the years..." Something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay," right??

So you are deceiving your buyers into thinking they are getting a bright BU coin. That does not mean cleaned coins are worth multiples of original. It simply means you are a piece of crap scammer.

Why would you brag to people who have integrity about coins, and are trying to help you, that you are a lowlife worthless crook?

I'm appalled that an individual would come into a public venue, and admit the things that I've heard in private from dealers, whom I've hired over my half-century+ of "collecting". I personally have been involved in multiple failures of prominent Numismatic firms that were "disbanded" (i.e. "closed down" without recompense or suspension of principals actions), but also 3 where funds were stolen with prosecution. Has anyone looked at the offerings today in public arenas, many with seeming apparent problems, in "premier" TPG slabs.

I appreciate the constructive corrective comments, but believe we should also correct organizations touting their unpublished standards, while disregarding uniformity in grading, disregarding published standards.

I've published inconsistencies in this venue multiple times, often being criticized by individuals ignoring facts, stating that Numismatics is a subjective industry. Caveat Emptor, and that the buyer should be aware, accepting the "market" trends. Hopefully, in time the credo will be Caveat Venditor.

Thanks for the hopefully corrective statements, but unless you're a victim, with constructive/objective evidence, your statements may be legally unwarranted/challenged.
