I think the photos are better than the ones I posted last week. The coin is dark and difficult to read. Was this minted in Alexandria, Egypt.

What is the meaning of the L and A on either side of the portrait?

    Nice tetradrachm.

L is a symbol for "year."
A is alpha, the Greek numeral one.

So, year one of Claudius Gothicus' reign.

"L" is the Egyptian symbol for "year". "A" is 1 in Greek. So your coin was struck in year 1 of his reign under the Egyptian calendar, which rolled over to a new year on August 29 or sometimes August 30, so your coin was struck in his first year 268 before August 29. Sear Says the reign of Claudius II began in August, so there must have been a burst of minting activity at the beginning of his reign because year 1 is not uncommon, although year 2 (which lasted a whole year) is (according to Emmett) more common than year 1.
