I just picked up this really cool Claudius II leftie. It even retains a good amount of silvering, which tends to be unusual for Claudius. It is also quite well struck, has full beading, and is of a good size. Ruler: Claudius II Denomination: BI Antoninianus Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG. Radiate bust left, flowing head straps. Rev: IVNO R-EGINA. Juno standing left with peacock at feet. Diameter: 21mm Weight: 3.8g Mint: Antioch Mintmark: None Reference: RIC Antioch 212 rad left Please post any unusual lefties.
I have one too: Claudius II, AD 268-270. Roman billon antoninianus, 3.41 g, 19.4 mm, 11 h. Antioch, 3rd emission, early-mid 270. Obv: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate head, left. Rev: IVNO REGINA, Juno standing left, holding patera and scepter; peacock at feet. Refs: RIC 212 (3L); Cohen 133; MER/RIC temp 1048; RCV --; Alfoldi 24/3; Huvelin 1990, 39.
The Antioch mint liked their lefties. CLAUDIUS II AE Antoninianus. 3.29g, 20.5mm. Antioch mint, circa early – mid AD 270. New RIC Online Temp #1053; RIC 221; Cohen 273. O: IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, radiate head left. R: SOL AVG, Sol with whip and upraised arm standing left.
There always is a special appeal to lefties when most of that ruler's coins face right. Sol, Iuventus, Aequitas, Juno
Lefty Claudius with Apollo reverse (but SALVS legend): Claudius II Gothicus Æ Antoninianus (268-270 A.D.) Antioch Mint IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, Radiate head left / SALVS AVG, Apollo standing left holding branch and leaning on upright lyre. RIC 216 var.; Sear 11368. (2.95 grams / 20 mm)
