Finally got around to photographing a couple of my favorite Claudius II coins. The first one is not particularly rare or well engraved, but I've been looking for a well struck, silvered example of the bust left, spear over shoulder type that I could afford. This one fits the bill. The second is a bit harder to find. There are losts of CONSECRATIO, alter types available, most quite reasonably priced. This coin is the CONSECRATIO with the funeral pyre type. They are rarely offered so I was quite thrilled to obtain this one, even in its worn state.
I love that Neptune reverse as someone else mentioned. I purchased this Claudius Gothicus not only because of the Apollo reverse, but also due to how handsome he looks, at least compared to some other emperors.
I have quite a few coins of Claudius II. This is the best of the lot and the bust type with shield and spear is very rare:
Here is another Claudius Gothicus from my collection. This one also commemorates his victory over the Goths. However, instead of the common reverse legend "VICTORIAE GOTHIC(AE)", this one has the rare variant "VICTORIA GVTTICA AVG".
Unfortunately, this coin is not in great shape. But I had to have it for my collection of Gothic victory celebrations with different bust types.
Wow, that's an impressive selection! Hopefully one day I'll also own one as complete and extensive as yours.
This is the common type of the SPQR mint. I wonder what the two dots below the emperor's bust mean. The coin is common, but in good condition with much of the silvering intact.
This piece was minted at Cyzicus. I understand that it is quite scarce. It was the Celator plate coin Vol. 16, No. 10, October 2002:
This is a common type, but in good condition. Its weight is outstanding at 6 grams. It is twice as thick as a normal Antoninian. You can see this a bit at the top edge of the picture:
Claudius II also won a victory against the Alamanni, who had invaded Italy. To commemorate the event the relatively scarce VICTOR GERMAN series was minted:
The dots are the officina marks - yours is from the second officina. I think they first appeared on Antioch antoniniani in the early part of the Crisis of the Third Century. Anyways, as I've already said, your collection is very impressive, and I'm trying to build up a collection of coins of this emperor, so I hope one day mine will be as vast as yours. Do you also own any interesting Claudius II from Antioch?
Claudius Gothicus is my favorite emperor. Many years ago I was planning on compiling a specialist collection of his coins. However, I was discouraged when I heard that another collector Finn Johannessen was pursuing the same goal. Hence, I only bought some pieces that I liked. I have some 50 coins of this emperor with a special focus on his Gothic victory celebrations.
According to the MER-RIC it is: http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/977?tempRIC=&asmSelect0=&asmSelect1=&asmSelect2=&asmSelect3=&asmSelect4=&asmSelect5=&asmSelect6=&asmSelect7=&Legend=VICTORIAE+GOTHIC&asmSelect8=&asmSelect9=&ReverseMark=–/–//–&asmSelect10=&asmSelect11=&BustDescription=&ReverseDescription=&Note=&Reference=&page=1&hpp=5&mod=result&from=advanced That's one of my current numismatic objectives; I hope I'll be able to complete it, at least partially.
I assume you are both aware of CNG 411 where the Finn Johannessen collection was sold. https://www.cngcoins.com/Search.asp..._TYPE_ID=2&VIEW_TYPE=0&MAX_COUNT=10000&PAGE=1 That sale is a textbook for this emperor.
Ah cool. I just noticed that the coin form Cyzikus has one dot, so first officina. I have never seen more than three dots though.
