    When I was a kid we used bottle caps. Smashed flat with a couple of holes and a string. Just because we were all about destruction at that age, we'd put a sharp edge on it or cut out little pieces to make a saw blade and have "whizzer wars" if you want to call it that. basically just a couple of us kids just spinning that sucker as fast as possible trying to cut each other's string while going head to head with the whizzers them selves.
