Another one of these Thrace Anchialus Septimius Severus City Gate coins I have had my eye on for quite a while and couldn't resist when it reached the right price point. Slightly different to the one I posted a couple of months ago in as much as missing a door and no arches on top of the wall only two blocks. From the modern day city of Pomorie (ancient city Anchialus) Anchialos acquired the appearance of a Roman city and thrived in the 2nd and 3rd century under the Severan Dynasty, serving as the most important import and export station of Thrace. Attribution: Moushmov 2810 Date: 193-211 AD Obverse: AV K Λ CEP - CEYHP P C, Laureate draped cuirassed bust right Reverse: City wall with two towers and two blocks along top of wall Size: 27.05 mm Weight: 13.08 grams Ex Ray Wilk/Ancient Imports. This type of City Gate comes in a large range of types and Emperors, below is a link to Ray Wilks page exhibiting quite a few. http://citygate.ancients.info/gates6.htm. That's a fantastic example AA! I got mine as a surprise in a bulk lot and I love me some campgates so I was thrilled when I saw it. And a few more favourite campgates... Yeah... campgates are fun.
Yeah before February I didn't own one now I'm close to 30... good times. I need to find more city gates from before the Constantine period.. but they're just not as cheap.
Rated R3, the following coin was struck in Antioch under Constantine II. It has 8 layers. RIC VII -ANT- 73.
It is such a big field will keep you busy for a while, I am thinking about getting more variety of the Constantine era but at the moment only have one that I bought in London a few moths ago.
Wow, colour me green... that doorless city wall is great! Definitely on my want list now. You've seen this one before, but it's my most recent city gate, also a Sep Sev. Having talked to people on another coin forum who live near the ancient site, bring up the possibility of it being the wall that faced the sea seeing the structure was on the coast....so same building as this but only the other side.
Oooh...nice!! I love those big pentassaria of Septimius Severus from the Balkans. Here's one of mine from Anchialus:
