In 1296 and 1345 the dukes of Brunswick gave and renewed the city&#039;s coinage right, which was exercised until 1676. The city gained a large measure of independence around 1430 when the duke had to leave his residence for Wolfenbüttel but the dukes unsuccessfully besieged the city in 1550, 1553 and 1615. Finally, Rudolf August, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, took the city after a siege in 1671 , and his bust&nbsp; then appeared on city coins.
