They minted these when silver was close to $40 an ounce and never lowered the price. You guys mock but these easily still fetch that on ebay. I bought the old man coin from their store for $60 when silver was at its all time high, if I were to sell it it wouldn't be at a pawnshop it'd be on ebay where I could get my $60 back easily. They are not making as much profit as you think they are but they did manage to turn there silver into rounds that didn't get hit hard when silver plummeted not bad marketing or business strategy there.
Quick ebay search has one with 21 bids for $69.99 with $4 shipping with 1 day 20 hours left. Another one for $32 with $4 shipping but with 3 days and 9 hours left and 7 bids. Those are the only 2 live auctions not ridiculous buy it now auctions. Here you go for Old Man Silver. One auction with 1 day 10 hours left for $78 and $4 shipping with 22 bids. Second auction for $26 and $4 shipping with 15 bids but with 3 days and 9 hours left. Like I said mock all you want but these for some odd reason still command the insane premium.
P.T. Barnum said no truer words a "Sucker is born every minute ." Silver trading right this minute @ 15.46 down -.20. I'm not going to pay 60/70 @ oz. Plus shipping $5.00 For something that is not going to be worth or is not worth more than SPOT! I will not make fun of someone who wishes to pay $60 for something but I do reserved the right to scratch my head wondering why. I understand one man's trash is another's treasures . For $60+ of my money is going on a sure thing, not something 20 years from now someone laughing saying yeah I remember that dude! I had an old fishing buddy whom collected sports cards. He say to me see this card it's worth $100.00 ! And I say it's not ....it's worth what someone will give you for it. Besides Topps can print thousands flood the market anytime. I show him an 1893 o Morgan and say 300,000. No more will ever be minted and many have been destroyed . I did respect my friends hobby and his passion .....however I think we all know how hot the baseball card market doing! The pawn shop one person talked about in their reply would offer no more than Spot! And be more than happy to let you walk for a dollar over spot. IMHO!
Thats the thing something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Honestly your example of the 1893 morgan has less silver than these rounds so from and intrinsic point of view would be worth less. But someone has attached a numismatic value to it as well as a grading value to it as well and made it worth more. If everyone said no way would I pay $300,000 for this coin it wouldn't be worth 300,000. Maybe 20 years down the road when the show is no longer on the air these rounds lose value and become just silver. Right now they have added value just like your 1893 morgan because people are attaching more value to them. That's all coins are perceived value same as baseball cards, comics or beanie babies.
Take your coin to a pawn shop ask what they will give you for it. Then ask them to put it in writing." Post their written offer here".....and then maybe I'll eat crow! I'm thinking I'll be having a juicy steak..... Plus a nice bottle of Red Zin to wash it down.
Oh crap I forgot it was an old man coin I bought I thought it was a Chum for some reason. All I really want to say is to each their own. Couple of you"ll need to learn to be a little less "salty" it's not appealing. Let people spend their money how they choose.
You better off buying Silver Proof Eagle and at lease you might get some bk or even in return. To pay for what these guys who are already rolling the dough then you are throwing your money alway.
Anything pawn star does especially this over price silver coin somehow a sucker will ended up buying. Just like them shop @ home does. Over priced coins
