I better get on my top 10 list, time is running out! This was a lean year cash wise, so I only picked up 16 ancients and one medieval. I did pick up a number of modern coins as well. All of my ancients were Roman, except for one Greek. I decided to focus on crossing some Roman coins off the list in 2017, and despite the limited number of coins, I picked up some cool stuff. 10. I always like to include one modern on the list in this spot to represent that collecting area. I like 18th century stuff and big ol' sexy piece of silver is great in hand! 1761, France, 1 Ecu O: LUD·XV·D·G·FR· ET NAV·REX· (Louis XV, By the Grace of God, King of France and Navarre) . My only medieval coin of the year, an unexpected coin show pick up. Nice sharp details and itty biddy. 8. This cross fouree off my list, and was also a denarius type I wanted. Two for one! Plus check out that stellar provenance! Roman Republic, Fourée Denarius imitating L. Thorius Balbus. 2.8g, 19mm, 3h; after 105 BC. Obv.: Head right of Juno Sospita, wearing goat-skin headdress; I. S. O:Laureate head of Apollo R: Victory standing left, inscribing shield attached to trophy; at base, carnyx to left; Q in field. Crawford 333/1; King 36 14x16 mm, 2.0g. 6. I wanted to make sure I worked a lady in this year, so I got this nice looking denarius of Plautilla. I really like her portrait, being just a kid really at the time, kind of reminds me of my girls. I wouldn't let my girls marry the @$$%^&e she got hitched to. Plautilla. Augusta, AD 202-205. AR Denarius Struck under Septimius Severus and Caracalla, AD 202-203. O: Draped bust right R: Concordia standing left, holding patera and scepter. RIC IV 363a, Rome mint. 18 mm, 3.7 g. 5. This cat has been on my list for years, and I was determined to add someone from the tetrarch era I didn't have. This coin edged out Constantius I, just had a better price and a kicking temple reverse. MAXENTIUS, FOLLIS, 306-312 AD O: IMP C MAXENTIVS P F AVG, Laureate head right R: CONSERV VRB SVAE, Roma seated left in tetrastyle temple presenting globe to Maxentius, captive seated between; wolf and twins in pediment, Victories each holding a wreath as acroteria. Plus @David Atherton is always showing cool Flavians and all I have to post is the same old two coins. Well, here's a third! Titus, AR Denarius, A.D. 76 O:T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS; Laureate head right; R:COS V; Eagle on cippus, head left. 15x18 mm, 3.5 g RIC II Rome 872 3. I saw this on sale on ebay and put in a total joke bid of 35 bucks. I won it for 32 if I remember correctly! BOOM! I didn't think I'd get a coin of this guy this year! Plus a big ol' drachm! BOOOOOM! I've REALLY been wanting a coin of Caligula, and REALLY wanted something with Germaniucs. The coin is in pretty good shape (for what I can afford), despite the surfaces everything is pretty clear. I love the story it tells, what a great propaganda piece from little bootikins! This one has been on my desk for months, I just don't want to put it up yet...I got my hand on it all the time! Germanicus. Æ Dupondius Struck under Gaius (Caligula), AD 37-41. I think the Germanicus is my favourite too, though I also love the Titus, the Plautilla, the Béla, and the écu... awesome group!!
Great set of coins and interesting types, love that Maxentius temple the most but all nice coins. Congrats on a great selection.
Wow, Chris, I really like that list. The Maxentius is a solid example of the type, and that Plautilla portrait is sweeeet. You scored a great bargain with the Aelius drachm and that Germanicus dupondius is outstanding!
Wonderful!!! Each would have won a place in my heart My favorites are the Germanicus, Plautilla and the Titus!!
@chrsmat71 I want them ALL! Way cool pick ups for 2017! The Germanicus is a winner. The Titus and Eagle is really cool! Aelius is a STEAL! Well done on them all! Your Titus with Eagle is REGAL / My Titus with Sow is purdy basic: RI Titus 79-81 CE AR Denarius Sow piglets
Il like the Germanicus, you got a very nice and interesting gift from @Orfew, that Aelius is a steal, nice eagle on #4, how not to like those Maxentius temples, I have a soft spot for Plautilla and the republic, the Bela is outstanding, and I understand your feeling at handling a big ol' french ecu !!
