Hope y'all had an excellent Christmas today, I spent the day away from the computers(... shucks) = lots of food, laughing wi' family, and watching movies.
So my wife bought me this thing. I made an offhand comment a few months ago about how I wouldn't mind trying my hand at keeping an aquarium. I guess we'll see how it goes. I did some research yesterday, which consisted mostly of watching youtubes about fish tanks. Let's hope I don't wind up with a bunch of dead fish...
Pretty cool gift ... I used to own a similar sized hexagonal fish-tank (it was a lot of fun and "when things were goin' well" it was a very peaceful and hypnotic addition to our front room) ... however, when things occasionally turned for the worst, the tank was not a great addition and became a smelly eye-sore ... => but again, when things are goin' well, aquariums are amazingly peaceful and beautiful (hint: make sure that you stay on top of keeping the tank clean) bottom-suckers (algae eaters) will quickly become your best friends .... I also suggest that you start with a handful of inexpensive fish, before you blow your money on the cool higher-end fish (although, once you go to the pet-store I bet you'll be tempted to snag yourself a handful of the exotics ... live and learn) Merry Boxing-Day, JA .... I hope that your new hobby gives you the same amount of enjoyment as your current coin-hobby!!
Good luck with the fish tank. I never was very good with them. I spent more time at fish funerals in the bathroom than enjoying the tank.
Thanks Steve. Fortunately we have a very large aquarium store in our town - I'm sure they can set me up. From what I've seen, if you have live plants and some algae eaters, you don't have to do any cleaning inside the tank - just replace 20% of the water every week and clean the filter once a month.
Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. We had fish tanks when we were kids, but we didn't know what we were doing and had more than a few bathroom funerals.
I hope you're retired. Seems like someone is trying real hard to mastermind a time consuming distraction, that will divert your attention from coin related hobbies to toilet funerals. Suspect everyone. Don't give in. Make it into a coin display case.
Awesome Big John, grab so sand and gravel and a small ship, drop some water in it and a giant octopus. pile your ancient coins at the bottom and you'll have yourself some buried treasure.
=> it sounds so simple, my friend (and I hope that it proves to be a quick and easy addition to your wonderful home)
I have to say the idea of having some ancient coins at the bottom of an aquarium appeals to the kid in me. I also wonder who will end up getting the worst of it, the fish or the coins.
Probably both. I'm sure it wouldn't do the coins any favors, and you're not supposed to have any metal in the tank as it negatively affects the water chemistry.
We kept fish for years and then switched to reptiles and amphibians of small size kept in a tank planted with live houseplants. We tried native ferns with a little success for half a year but they go dormant and Philodendron doesn't. I do not recommend large, rodent eating snakes but there are a lot of cricket eaters that live a long time in a planted tank if kept warm.
=> ahahaha, I totally agree with you there! (it took me quite a while to realize that the pretty local rocks that I was adding to my fish-tank had nickel in 'em!) ... that proved to be a bit of an expensive over-sight!
