A very good friend (from this site) has presented me with an early Christmas present. My very first Siliqua. Having never had/held or seen one (in the flesh) I don't know what I thought - just another coin, maybe, but they are not. They 'feel' different. I am blown away firstly by the generosity, and secondly by the coin - not the 'best' example but certainly for an 'entry', it is a very nice example. CONSTANTIUS II 353-360 A.D. 2nd son of Constantine. Ruled with Constantine II and Crispus. Obv:DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG; Pearl, diademed,draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev: VOTIS XXX MVLTIS XXXX four lines in wreath SCON in ex. Silver Siliqua AR18mm. 1.87gm RIC VIII. Arles 207S (& 253S);
VERY VERY NICE TopCat! Great gift, and a cool denom. I only have ONE myself, but it is such an unusual coin... Arcadius, AD 395-408 AR Siliqua, 16mm, 1.1g, 12h. Obv.: DN ARCADI-VS PF AVG; Pearl diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev.: VIRTVS RO-MANORVM; Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and reversed spear. Mint MDPS, struck in Milan in 402, Ref: RIC1227 From the Doug Smith Collection, #2829
Wow, Topcat => that's a sweet OP-addition (congrats) Hmmm? ... Gandalf and I must have grown-up in the same hood, for I only have one example as well (and it's an Arcadius Siliqua as well!!) ... flow-lines galore!!
Nice one ! But the Id is not good, it's not the RIC207, because this RIC207 is a heavy siliqua (3.3gr), struck before 355. Your siliqua is a "normal" siliqua, struck between 355 & 361, with a weight of 2.20 gr., RIC261-FerII 1030. Enjoy
Thanks @SIliquae and @Topcat7 ... I fixed wherever I could edit, including my own specs. I could not attribute properly. Bad eyes, and poor Imperial knowledge on my side.
