What do you guys think about this coin? Chop mark or just atypical damage?

rzage What Goes Around Comes Around .

Looks more random than an actual chop mark or counterstamp , maybe something was on the planchet when it was struck .

Silver definitely does ring differently to copper-nickel. Just balance a silver coin on your finger and strike it lightly with e.g. a spoon. then compare the sound with a copper-nickel or steel coin.

I'll have to try this with several different ones to see if I can distinguish Ag 720 or 500 by the ring.

It shows signs of pressure on the reverse corresponding to where the mark is, as with a countermark. So I think it was post mint, and it looks like it's been there for a long time judging by the toning in the mark. It's quite an unusual shape though; reminds me of a tentacle.
