I have just found a much sneakier counterfeit peddler, also based in Canada. These are coins that were recently auctioned. They are not the same types I typically see, except that 1643 Augsburg thaler which all of these sellers seem to have. A few people have already reported his items and a couple have noted the counterfeits in feedback. This one has made a killing on these fakes, many of which have sold for a lot of money. I have traced his feedback all the way back to 2009 and found that back then they were selling the typical types as the previous sellers I have reported. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-World-/256/i.html?_ipg=25&_from=&_nkw=&LH_Complete=1&_armrs=1&_ssn=collectablesrwcompany Personally this makes me very angry. PS: Notice the other typical signs: 1. Fake coin listings are private, while all other listings are not. 2. Fake coin photos are not able to be enlarged while many other items are. 3. Mixing counterfeits of high end coins with low end genuine coins. 4. Often coins sell well below what genuine examples sell for due to serious collectors recognizing them as fake.
It may be an unpopular attitude here on this forum but the real problem are the people spending money to get a great deal on rare silver, not unscrupulous merchants. They are everywhere not only numismatics. It's up to the buyer to do their homework before buying a car, house, coin or vaccum cleaner.
I understand your concern. I still believe the precedent for shady merchants is ancient, not new and certainly not getting worse because of the internet. Instead of standing in a market stall in Constantinople peddling suspect wares, they do it on Ebay now. You still need to walk on by.
Very true, though I do believe the internet adds an extra layer because people doctor photos or purposely take them out of focus to hide details that may give the item away as a counterfeit. At least the "market stall" manner of buying gives the opportunity to inspect the item. With eBay, even knowledgeable people end up buying fakes because what they are seeing is not what they are getting.
There is a very nice article in the recent CN Journal (July/August issue), of one man's fight against the infux of Chinese counterfeit coins into Canadian numismatics... This very thread, and CoinTalk, was also mentioned in the article. Well done Mike... you deserve all the credit for making this hobby a better place for the rest of us. I am very grateful for that. Roger --
I will ask the editor of the CN Journal, if they will give me permission to share the article here. I am a columnist in that journal (I author the column on Canadian varieties, and I know the editor well). If I get permission, I will scan it and post it.
And another "Chinadian". http://www.ebay.com/sch/sellsofkenn...me=STRK:MEWAX:IT&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Thanks again
