  1. I notice that Amazon collects sales tax so that the customer does not have to bother with the use taxes that would be otherwise collected by a state.

Amazon either collects the sales tax on commercial merchants who would face a tax liability themselves or collects the use tax that would otherwise be payable by the commercial merchants' customers. Amazon's involvement is necessitated by the many products that are fulfilled by Amazon itself in many states.

In addition to state taxes, Amazon collects any sales tax for counties and municipalities as prescribed by local law.

Don't know how Ebay itself could face state tax liability on listing merchandise since Ebay doesn't sell or ship the merchandise.

Ebay does allow listings to include sales tax for commercial merchants that would incur tax liability for sales in that state or sales to a state that has a sales tax treaty. However, some commercial merchants likely eat the tax liability themselves, not wishing to penalize in-state bidders.

Even so, other platforms exist internationally, based in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.

Purchased these coins from MA-SHOPS merchants recently:

States are accountable to voters, so its unlikely that states would levy taxes on transactions made exclusively by ordinary residents regardless of venue (except for automobiles).
