OK. I think kids that are interested in coins are the future of our hobby. I also think that any coin that you find interesting is worth collecting, no matter what anyone else thinks about it.

But let's not forget to mention the source of these new additions to your collection.
Folks that are willing to give kids coins, in order to keep their collecting interests sparked, are few and far between. Those people need to be recognized, and credited for their efforts.

Your "findings"? I thought that someone let you search through their change jar and pick out the coins that you wanted.
I certainly wasn't trying to down play the coins. I have many coins myself, that would likely only be interesting to me.

Well, I don't find them anymore, but they used to be pretty common back in the mid-sixties. Just curious, how long have you been collecting?
Perhaps if you have been collecting for "many years" you might be wiser than the average collector.

That shouldn't surprize anyone should it? Most people don't collect coins, and therefor don't pay attention to the "collectible" ones.

Well, the "goodness" of your heart is certainly well noted.

Didn't realize I was doing that.
And what if you were given a "grab bag"? Would that be a bad thing?

Nice finds. It seems you do the same thing as me. You raid other peoples change and keep the good stuff lol.

That's it. Due to the intimidating and debasing replies of a fellow member I am here-by shutting down this thread as much as possible and will reopen a new one once this one dies down.

Jody, as a moderator of this forum, I faithfully request that you delete this thread in its entirety please.

Nice find on the '56 Washington. One man's trash is another man's treasure, but I guess in this case, its one man's spare change is another's treasure ;)

I take it from all the Denver mints your an east coaster too.

Can you tell me why I should delete the thread?

I can't see any rules violations.

Who do you feel is being "intimidating" and "debasing"?

    Hey Nos

Whats happening ? Always a cool thing to find coins of interest ,regardless of where they maybe!! I search thru several waitresses coins every saturday at the local truck stop, and I leave them a better than average tip plus replace what I take from their coins,From the goodness of my Heart? well maybe but I think it is more because I want their coins they dont collect have no interest in collecting and I can find coins from all over the place ,What do you think?

Im glad that this thread got left here to reply to ,, and read, because that is another aspect of this hobby ,, the varied and often informative opinions of others.

Nice find NOS. I try to do as much of that sort of thing myself, as far as looking through other folk's change before they haul it to the bank. I check them for errors as well. Something else I would suggest, if you regularly go to some bank or store, make friends with the clerks/tellers and see if they will save any odd or interesting coinage for you. That's where I get most of my silver (although mostly from the bank tellers), wheaties, and oddities. I usually give them a little "finders' fee" as well to give them a little incentive to stay on the lookout. Last year, such arrangements brought me about 18.00 in silver, about half of which was Mercs.

Not really collector, but like reading about some of the interesting coins mentioned on this board.

Didn't see the thread before NOS deleted parts of it, but Jody, you do come off sounding a bit condescending in some of your replies,

just my 2 cents worth. Congrats NOS.

Amen! Zvez agrees with me on the posts of Jody! Now due to the enlightened replies here I will now post the original message:
Okay so today I was with my mom at my dad's boss's home for a bit and I was trying to look into their jar of coins and as I looked closely I saw the reverse of a silver quarter! Now, I wasn't gonna ask to check the moderately small jar but when I saw that quarter I couldn't resist and they let me check! I found quite a few good coins including the following:

    3 unc. cents dated 83D,92D, and 96D.
    3 wheat pennies dated 44, 56D, and 58D.
    A nickel dated 1958D, an UNC. 87D, and a pretty nice 97D.
    1 silver quarter dated 1956!!!
2 dimes- an 1987D mint gem BU mint fresh, and a very nice uncirculated 95D!

What makes this especially special and uncommon is that there were only about $3 in quarters and about 3 rolls worth of pennies! As for the picture here I had to lower the quality a tiny bit due to size restrictions here and do take note that there are tiny specs on the glass so they look much better in person. The 97D nickel may look poor but as I have said it is on the glass and not the coin.

I think it is quite amazing to find a P mint silver quarter this far over here. Maybe some kid found his dad's coin collection and spent some of his coins?

Nice find on the silver quarter. Silver is always good. Too bad the Nickel is a 58D. 58 Philly is a much tougher find.

Perhaps you can explain your comment.
    I'm always willing to learn.

I could also explain but I'll let him say what needs to be said. Finding this quarter is encouraging me to go to a local bank here where their coins always seem to be shot gunned and rolled from a machine. Does anyone know if silver coins would be rejected from it though since their weight differs from clad? If not I might get 5 or 6 rolls of quarters from them.

I recently got some halves from the Federal Reserve that were machine wrapped. I found a few 90% & 40% silvers in those rolls. Any weight differential would be greater with the halves, and it still worked. If you are mostly interested in finding silver, I would recommend you look through rolls of halves instead of quarters.

Well do most banks have rolls of half dollars available? A few years ago I asked the teller for a roll and she cheaply pointed to a change holder and said she didn't have any so I have not asked since. It would be fun to find silver but I am also interested in finding older uncirculated clad coins but quarters are very few and far between since they aren't saved in jars anything like the penny is.

    Jody,
I've pm'd you, no point in crowding the list with off topic items.

Makes it difficult to follow along when people delete posts, but in any case, I think there is simply an age difference involved here.

For many or most of us, most of the coins pictured are of no interest, but of course a couple of them are, and would be to anyone. The bottom line is, whatever keeps your interest in coins going is a good find. Your tastes and perspectives will change over time, but if you get the bug because of the coins you pictured, then that’s great.

I recall when I was young, getting an S coin in change (late 60, early 70s) was like a huge gift as it was rare to find them in Massachusetts. If I showed these finds to someone in San Francisco, they probably would have laughed at me. But, it was fun for me at the time.
