Hello, thanks for showing your collection. Do you have any silver Akche or Dirhams to show. Akche don't look like much, but they were aparently the main currency of the Ottoman Empire after Suleiman the Magnificent. I wouldn't go so far as to say I want to collect "one of every coin in the world"--at my age and with my means I know that goal would be illusory, but I am rather like you in collecting whatever appeals to the eye--and I do try to get coins from as many countries and centuries as possible. Can you read the inscriptions on your coins? Maybe we can appoint you our resident Ottoman and Arabic specialist.

Great looking coins. Welcome to the forum. You have a much better start on your collection than I do. I really like what you have.

Would you mind posting some closeup photos of the paper? Thanks. Love your sample collection. I have one "Harrem Gold Piece," like some of your's it had a hole in it. I do not know much about mine. I am still not sure, if I regret leaving the 5$ gold eagle behind in order to be able to leave the store with the Turkish piece.

For such a young person, you have a remarkable collection. BTW, I was about your age when my collection of mint sets, silver, and silver certificates were stolen. Keep your collection locked up tight and away from the bad guys and gals.

    Thank you for posting.

ffrickey: i only got 2 akches, 1 from II Murad 1421 year, and II Bayezid from 1481. Ottoman empire used akches widely, but after the 16th century, they moved from akches to more european style coins, like the polish zloty. Polish who took refuge in ottoman empire, they brought along their own currency thus the new ottoman coinage was born. And yes i try to collect as much as possible with limited budget. This forum will certainly help to gather information etc. I can read most of the coins, arabic is a bit harder, but ottoman turkish is easier to read since its spoken like turkish but written in arabic alphabet. I have some experience with it, i can read dates and the names where it is minted and which sultan it belongs.

Thanks financeman, i try my best to have a kosmopilitan coin collection :D

sunflower: i will make another close picture of the paper money, that is what you mean right? Maybe you can post a picture of your gold coin, ill take a look. If any of you have unknown ottoman coins, i will gladly help with it.

Most people around me know of my collection, 1 person stole 1 coin from me. An ayyubid coin, very old. Now i am more careful with showing everything. It must be a hard blow to loose all the stuff you worked on :(

BTW a question, coins with a hole in it, does it serieusly reduce the price? i dont mind really, because the historic and eye value is far more important to me

If you could post better pics (photographed straight on) of the two Abbasid coins, I might be able to help you with the inscriptions.

    Wonderful collection, thanks for sharing.

thank you zuhara, i will make better pictures. I wil upload them later today.

i have a general question, does a hole in a coin reduce the value dramaticaly or does it also depend on the condition?

I know those reichsmarks are cool, too bad it was such a sinister regime. But I go love collecting the nazi coins. They are hot here in Florida? Are they hot in your area?

Thanks, these photographs are much clearer :). The caliph on the reverse of the first coin appears to be al-Ta'i (974-991). He was one of the caliphs who ruled as a puppet caliph under the Buyids. If so, there may be a Buyid ruler lurking on another side of your coin. I have to go now, but I will take a look at it this evening and see what I can make out. You have a very interesting collection.
