Not rare but a popular coin and one that I have wanted but always seem a bit pricey but come across this one on Vcoins the other day and ticked all the boxes at under half comparable quality CNG archive coins price. Excellent! Reminds me that I not only need a Alexandrian tet of Nero, but I need one with a galley and dolphins.
I don't know what it is about these galleys that brings bidders out of the woodwork but I'm glad you found one at a good price! And, with dolphins . Nice score!
It strikes me that Nero tets in general have a better than average array of interesting reverses but show terrible workmanship and metal. This example is better than many shown online from 'name' sales. I did see one that went very high due to full strike and reasonable billon but any coin in this series with eye appeal is a keeper.
This is a type I have been looking for in a suitable condition and at an acceptable price. If I had seen this one before you, this would have been my thread. Great purchase of a nice coin.
Vcoins bargains: I haven't bought many coins from Vcoins but here are two picked up four years ago. They probably aren't of interest to many but they are welcome additions to my Pigasus collection and so far I haven't found any references for the exact type nor any others in archives IONIA, Klazomenai 4th century BC AE 10.7 mm, 1.53 gm. Obv: head of Athena right Rev: ram lying left, winged boar above, Φ in left field; ANOK (ANOY?) below Ref: Not in literature consulted, including Imhoof-Blumer, F., Kleinasiatische Münzen. The seller had another one with slightly different reverse, same size, also yet to be found in literature. It has extensive old corrosion but the winged boar is clear enough:
Good on you, Aussie! This is a type that has been on my radar a few months now, and in my browsing around, I find that few examples meet my aesthetic standards. Yours seems nicer than the majority I've come across. Nicely done! Like that fully-defined galley.
Wow, nice Nero Tet @Ancient Aussie ! Galleys and Dolphins! A full fleet in that single coin! Hmmm... Outside a few Marcus Antonius, not too many Galleys in my repertoire!
