The local coin club here in Charleston has a small show twice a year, usually in February and August. The show was this weekend, so I decided to go check it out yesterday after work. It is usually a very small show, only about 40 dealers or so. Friday afternoon is usually slower than Saturday, and it was chilly and rainy which dampened turnout even more. There were actually more collectors buying than I expected, with a fairly steady stream.

It is very interesting to compare the type of material at a small show like this, compared to a big show like FUN. At FUN, nearly every dealer has a table full of slabbed coins, and they might have a couple of boxes or folders of raw coins. At this show, nearly everything was raw. Many dealers didn't have any slabbed coins at all, or just a small portion of the case.

While looking around, this coin caught my eye. Very attractive, original dark grey surfaces, with the perfect cameo contrast that we all love so much. So I bought it. Go ahead and guess the grade and Overton!

I think I'd put an O-103 sticker on that. Nice! VF25 for the grade. If the stuff on the hair in the middle of the coin and by LI in LIBERTY is removable goo, I'd seriously consider having it removed.

Reminds me of a very dark half bust half that I have.
The shield and wing wear on the reverse looks closer to a 35
    the obverse looks 25
    I am at VF30.
    Nice original looking Half.

I'll guess 30. Always nice to pick up an original pre' 1824 half.

Dirty thirty. I just picked up a raw 1834 at a small local show last weekend.

    30. Nice pick up. Especially as an R5 as mentioned for the 103.

Recut 10th star. Dot on shield between lines 4 & 5.

I'd give it a 30 but it has a beautiful patina; makes the denticles pop out.

25 was my guess....an ideal example of a circulated coin!

You guys are spot on with the O-103 guess. It is an R-5-, which is one of the reasons I bought it. This is the only rare Overton for the date.

On later die states, there is a crack through Star 6 to her nose, and a crack through the top of the date to her drapery. On my coin, I can see the crack through the star to her nose, but not the second one. It is reported that O-103a is actually rarer, but mine doesn't quite make it to the late die state.

    I'll post the grade tomorrow.

That is the proper look for an old, circulated coin, not white.

    Grade reveal!

PCGS called this VF-20, with CAC sticker.

I think 20 is a bit low, but I don't think it quite has what it makes for a 30. 25 is the right grade for this coin, I think, but they don't give that one out very often.

@physics-fan3.14 Nice write up and a wonderful coin. I’ve never really collected US coinage so this was a very enlightening thread for me.

I can’t tell the difference between a cut and recut star nor am I seeing the dot on the shield. But at least now I am looking.
