I wish to step aside on this subject and yield to the metalurgist. Like I said,, I know a little chemistry and I thought there was some melting involved within the crystalline structure at the point which causes the structure to realign. It is a process which does require taking in factors other than just temperature. Even hot metal still gets pounded in order to shape it.
The three legged buffalo was caused by a mint employee polishing the leg off, not struck through. EDIT - I thought I read the whole post and didn't see Ziggy already mentioned this.
The term is 'metal fatigue'. I know a thing or two about the strength of metals (I am a structural engineer) but I am not a metalurgist. I can tell you that when metal is stressed beyond its maximum strength it can fail quickly (e.g., a building or bridge collapsing) but when metal is stressed below its maximum strength repeatedly it can eventually fail due to metal fatigue. (A good example of metal fatigue is Aloha Airlines Flight 243 that "popped its top" due to metal fatigue. The plane was essentially a puddle hopper which means it is a LOT of takeoffs and landings and not a lot of hours landing. Therefore the cabin was pressurized and depressurized many more times than planes that had longer routes. Over time the top of the cabin was weakened due to metal fatigue and during a flight one day in 1988 a large portion of the cabin roof flew off. A flight attendant was sucked out to her death.) I lifted this definition from Wikipedia: metal fatigue - and localized structural damage that occurs when a material is subjected to cyclic loading
I do want to clarify that I am not a metallurgist I do not have a degree in the feild. But as I stated metal working is a hobby of mine. This is just basic knowledge that comes with learning welding, fabrication and casting. I don't want to cause confusion and have people think I'm something I'm not.
For any of you who want it its on ebay now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160553584373 Regards
Really cool coin, but think I will stay on the sidelines. Curious to see if it sells.... However, you may want to consider fixing the headline. "Sheild" may not show up in too many searches.
