2 in 30 years, thats a good record! my first 2 years at a small pizza place, i personally was given a fake $10. it was also my job to do the drops at the bank, and thats when i found out about the $10. i had to put my initials on it and even though i told them, there was no way i could remember who gave it to us, still had to talk to the feds. we ended up getting more, mostly twenty's, but i made sure everything i got was legit. my friend decided to make fake $100's just to see how good he could get them. they were perfect, my magic pen worked on them and everything. only bad part was they left glitter on your hand! he used some kinda glitter for the shinny parts. but they really did look perfect, so i personally put them in the shredder. there was no way i would chance them ever getting out into circulation!
In the last eight months, my restaurant has had four, all twenties. Three were really good and one was just a colored photocopy (it even had a phony bank deposit stamp on it). The large grocery store in my neighbourhood gets one or two per month, usually twenties or fifties. We get warnings from the bank regularly about new counterfeits that are circulating.
As a manager of a store and have sent in fake $100,$50, and $20 bills a coupletimes still does not derail me from setting a limit on what people can pay with. Yes, credit card fees suck for a buisness but we still take checks and I wish we did not. We do have that magic marker which can not be trusted all the time. There was a thread a day ago about why someone would counterfeit smaller bills this is the main reason, people just don't check I know I hardly check the smaller bills.
I just googled "fake $100" and found the latest one for Canada: Even with all the security features the bills have, unless the vendor or staff check them, phony ones still get through. http://www.canada.com/windsorstar/news/story.html?id=a1d42a5b-78b6-48db-aa39-42a00feb5391
Looks like an opportunity for a collector. If the note does not catch on, it will likely be discontinued. Less population potential sounds like luck for a collector.
It would not surprise me one bit if we go to a complete cashless society. Everything will probably be electronic and no cash would exchange hands at all. I think that it is just a matter of time before this happens.
Well, it's my shop. Like Lucifer said when he was cast into the Pit, "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven."
about the only time I spend $100s are a) at coin/currency shows; b) in Las Vegas at casinos. rarely do $50s either. of course, most ATMs only give out $20s anyway, so I don't have much opportunity. I specifically go into the lobby and get $100s from the teller before a show or a Vegas trip. (I say that like I go to Vegas all the time -- I've only been twice, but I just went last month so it's fresh in my mind.)
I generally get 50's from my bank because they are easier than 100's but still hard enough. I have to think about it before spending one (that's the point). I hate ATM's and especially hate how banks try and make you use them. If a machine could give me any combination of coins and currency I wanted I would use it.
I had no idea about folks having difficulty spending $100's, it's amazing how much difference there is around the country. In Calif, I get and spend $100's all the time, and rarely have a store even look twice at one, let alone mark it with a pen. Perhaps we're a bit more "don't ask, don't tell" out here, probably half what we're passing around is fake! Dave
The only time I have had problems with the 100's is when I go to a smaller family owned store or a bodega type of place. I asked why once. They don't want the hundreds due to liability issues with possible counterfeiting and the fact that it normally wipes them out of change on hand. Other than that, no problems here in PA.
