Hi, This may not be the best place to post this but thought I would give it a shot on the off chance. I found this in the UK whilst metal detecting but as yet cannot identify it much. It appears to be made of lead alloy/pewter, approx 20mm diameter, about 4mm thick on raised areas and weighs 6 grams. There are no legends. The obverse is in the design of a celtic pellet horse. Not sure of the reverse though as I have not found a similar design, it may possibly be a very basic bust or even a wine glass or a jug depending on which way up you look at it, could even be side on like a horn, there are several lines radiating from the flat end but i do not know what that signifies. It is quite like a Celtic potin or a Roman billon. Could possibly be an inn token. Even any thoughts on the reverse design would help?

I think the obverse is a crude type of this Celtic horse design.

Any chance of cleaning it up a little? Which country was it found in?

It was found in the UK, in the Midlands. The museum has it at the moment to record it and hopefully identify it but they may have nothing to compare it to. I may get it back next month.

If you think it is celtic, have you thought about sending photos to Chris Rudd?

I have just emailed Chris Rudd, I look forward to their opinion as it is a strange item. I am guessing it to be a locally made token but would mainly like to know if it is Celtic or Roman or not! Oh, and what that reverse design is? Hopefully there should be some respected gurus opinions soon.

Well, Chris Rudd has replied saying that it is not a British potin as it is too heavy, (which I already knew), but that it could be Continental! No more info.
Might just have to wait to see what the museum, UK (PAS) Portable Antiquities Scheme determines it to be. I will let you know their opinion when they give it.

Hi guy's, It's taken a good while as the British museum requested to see the actual item and it has only recently been recorded and returned to me. Here is their conclusion which only favours Roman though they have not seen the same before. https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/846892
It's a bit of an odd one but any further thoughts are most welcome.

Am I the only one seeing a copy of this on the reverse?
