Yes, sorry. Casey suggests that the unmarked coins were produced in London prior to the London mint marks. For timing of the unmarked production (286-287), he relies on analysis of the silver content of the coins to show that the unmarked antoniniani produced on new flans (not overstruck) lack any silver content, while those of the marked mints contain some silver. For location of the unmarked mint (London), he points to a die link between an RSR aureus and an unmarked antoninianus. But he also acknowledges the possibility of central die production.
What a great thread. Carausius was born a Menapian, and the Menapii were a tribe living in what now is Flanders and Zeeland. So technically, with a little stretching, Carausius was a Dutchman or a Fleming, and I'm interested in the earliest coins from the Netherlands. I'm living not far from Forum Hadriani, but there were no coins minted in that picturesque semi-barbarian seaside market town (as far as we know). But I don't have an acceptable Carausius - yet. When I find it, I will show it to you.
LOVE this thread!!! This is my only example---with a long ago initial photo--- and originally purchased from Littleton several decades ago....with a PAX reverse I would think, but the S A or H has me a bit baffled since I'm expecting PAX or AVG Not much to look at, but it's Carausius LOL
The SA makes Salus pretty certain but that great snake nosing the patera from his flaming altar makes that a coin I would love to have. Not much to look at? Plenty! Sure we would prefer full legends and no chunks missing but lets get real. This is Carausius not one of those guys who comes in EF everyday.
Nice coins all. For many years I've been trying to hunt down a legionary type of Carausius but have had no luck. There are quite a few varieties but they all seem to be very, very scarce. Was wondering if @Carausius has an example he can post.
Unfortunately, I do not have a legionary type. Several have come up for sale over the past few years. They tend to be in miserable condition and I always think "I'll wait for a better one" but the better ones never show-up!
Exactly! They used to show up on ebay UK every now and then as metal detector finds, but haven't seen one offered in years. I guess I should have bought one of the lesser condition pieces when I had the chance.
Considering how hard it is to find a Pax type in a condition that would be considered even just collectible were it anyone else's issue, we might need to be easy on things like legionaries or the fancy busts. Who has Carausius coins of any type with really nice surfaces on both sides? dlhill's second has a nice obverse save a few flatish letters. The rest of our coins here are 'typical'. My collection includes more compromise coins than most. Surface roughness is an area I really would prefer to avoid. All of my Carausius coins are at least somewhat rough. I just feel lucky if that is their only problem. The Carausius issue below is off center in the worst way but I am good at compromise.
Love those crude antoninians of Carausius. On top of my list is a denarius of his with lupa reverse : one has sometimes to wait a long time.... Here's my former axample (sold a while back) Carausius, Antoninianus IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG, Radiate and cuirassed bust of Carausius right PAX AVG, Pax standing left, holding spear and branch 4,44 gr Ref : RC #3580, Cohen #219 And the one I still have Carausius, Antoninianus Colchester mint ? IMP CARAVSIVS P F AVG, radiate bust right MONITA (sic) AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia 3,64 gr Ref : RCV # 13629v, Cohen # 178 var, RIC, cf #867 Q
An old thread, but I finally acquired a Carausius antoninianus, well, a barbaric imitation, that makes me very happy. The style is a bit like the Rotomagus (Rouen) coin on page 1 of this thread, but obviously barbaric. AE 15-17.5 mm (oval), weight 2,41 gr. Obv. Radiate head right. Readable text IMPCCA ... VG. Rev. Salus? with a text that I can't read, but there's a cross or an X at the end.
There is more crud that coin lol. Its very far gone though and removing anything would damage it more
