Aurelius Antoninus in AD 188 in Lugdunum, was the elder son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. At the age of eight, he was given the rank of Caesar and two years later, was created Augustus. Upon the death of Severus in AD 211, Caracalla reigned jointly with his brother, Geta, as Severus had arranged. Then in December 211 at a reconciliation meeting arranged by their mother Julia, Caracalla had Geta assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard loyal to himself, Geta dying in his mother&#039;s arms. Caracalla then persecuted and executed most of Geta&#039;s supporters and ordered a damnatio memoriae pronounced by the Senate against his brother&#039;s memory. His reign was marked by extravagance and cruelty and Caracalla was finally murdered by the orders of Macrinus, the praetorian prefect on April 8th, AD 217.&nbsp; He was considered to be a real monster by all accounts.[/QUOTE]</p><p><br /></p>
