Because of an interesting portrait, I bought this damaged, largish Roman Provincial. I figured I'd be able to attribute it, but I am stumped. Hadrianapolis, or somewhere in Thrace was as close as I could come, but I could never find an exact match, mostly because the reverse is so pitted. The portrait/inscription leads me to believe this is Caracalla, but Elagabalus is a possibility, I suppose. The aspects of it that are puzzling on the reverse are the blobs - rocks? waves? - in the exergue. The seated figure - I am guessing Tyche - seems to be sitting on a pile of rocks, rather than a throne - and I found several rock pile examples, but no convincing matches. It is 26 mm and weighs 12.04 grams. Any help would be much appreciated.
This will be tentative as so much of the critical legends are missing but I'm fairly confident this is it: Caracalla Moesia Inferior, Marcianopolis Cybele enthroned left between two lions and holding phiale and resting on drum. Varbanov926
Cybele! Thank you - my Tyche approach was way off, obviously. And so I continue to learn... Thank you Ken and Roman Collector. I appreciate the help.
