Yesterday I missed out on this coin that I had set my hopes upon. But I want to show it to you all the same: what curly details! His hair almost looks papillotted: Caracalla scowling before his bathroom mirror... And a rare type, too. It went unsold in several auctions of the seller for high prices, and now attained about half of the limit of the last one. Still, too much for me. A silver didrachm from Tarsus (rare denomination from a city that has a special meaning for me), 215-217 AD. Rev. shows Nike with palm and wreath. 23 mm, 4.56 gr. SNG Levante 1041 (variations in legends); Prieur 800 (idem).
'Spoolies', I had to look that up (being from another country, the age is right I'm afraid). That's a modern form of papillottes.
A cool coin and a scarce denomination---it's easy to see why you wanted it---me too! Hmmm, I wonder if they called those things 'spoolies' in the North-East during the '50's??? Scary images of women in 'curlers' and 'gook' all over their faces come to mind
That's what I was looking for on the internet. You don't want to know what pictures are popping up if you search for 'spoolies' and 'mother-in-law' or 'stepmother'. I hoped for a nice picture from an old French movie, but alas.
HAHAH, WE were bidding on the same one, not sure why original asking price was 1,200 Euro , but similar types were selling for $250-260
Well, the limit I saw was 480 euros, probably in one of the other auctions, there were three I believe. Did you buy it? Congrats!
Just last night I won 7 rare Islamic coins for much less than I had expected (and a lot less than the nice OP didrachm). There is enough, even for a small scale collector like me.
No I didnt ... To me, it was worth $165, but i think Naumann, or Solidus sold similar types via auction for $220-$260
I found this coin at Solidus (Coinarchives), that went for 260 euros (= some $320 incl. costs). But it's not nearly as curly and attractive as the OP.
