Capped bust half dollar experts. Real or fake?

    I tend think that this piece is real, but damaged from having spent time in the ground. Having said that, I would not want it my collection, and would not buy it. I would not want to involved with buying and selling something like this given the current climate with so many counterfeits in numismatic circulation.

    It would be in the right range if it was very heavily worn not is this high grade. As you say it is more than 4% off but the tolerance when new was only .7% so it is off by about 6 times the tolerance range

    Until 1837 they were .8925 fine and the tolerance allowance on the fineness was very tight, usually in the range of +/- .002

    A specific gravity test on this piece could be enlightening.
