Can Someone Please Explain What Is Up With The 2017 Cent?

Or maybe not since it would just be a grease filled die. Hard to say if it would be valuable or not. People pay big money for a 1922 D cent that's missing the mintmark, not much at all for a NH quarter that is missing the mintmark from a grease fill (All MH quarters should have mintmarks) and they don't seem to care at all about 1968, 69, and 70 nickels with no mintmarks (Philadelphia didn't strike nickels those years, just D and S.)

You know, Conder, my comment takes on an entirely different meaning if you quote the whole thing.

Not really. The rest of your comment went on to explain why one with a missing mintmark would be worth a whole bunch. My comment expressed a reasoning as to why they might not.

What's the big deal about the first time a "P" mint mark was on a cent? I've had one in my collection for years!

I live in Oregon too. It is a rare day indeed to get newly or recently minted coins from the Philadelphia mint.

Yeah, right! You went on to mention the 1922-D missing the mintmark, so why didn't you mention the possibility of a grease-filled die for it?

Take your time thinking of a good reply. I'm sure you'll come up with one.

  10. Evidently, since it's a one year deal honoring the mint in Philly, the mintmark won't appear on the 2018 cents.

One of the articles I was reading said that the Philadelphia mint will not continue to put the "P" on the penny in 2018. Another article I read said that it costs more to make the penny than it is worth and another article said that the penny and the nickel are going to be discontinued. I wonder if any of this stuff is related...?

Some of them probably ARE grease filled dies (The 1, 3, and 4 die pairs that don't show traces of the mintmark.)

Not related. The P on the Cent this year celebrates the 225th anniversary of the US Mint (in Philadelphia) and thus, a P mint mark for this year only.

It does cost more to make 1¢ than a cent, but there are no current plans to stop making them.

It has cost over a a cent and five cents to make the cent and "nickel" for well over ten years now, and they still haven't gotten around to stopping throwing money away. Of course this is the government we're talking about.

While President Hairdo is signing all of these executive orders, maybe somebody can slip one into the middle of the pile that eliminates the cent and nickel.

as I had earlier mentioned in this thread bdunnse, he lacks the authority.

the power to coin money lies with Congress, specifically, the House of Representatives.
