Haa, Rlm, Maybe I would fit after the explosion had jellied me. I assure you I can't fit into a box 2 x 2 1/4 x 3 ft as an articulated human. Maybe years ago.

    That's right.

And the coins won't do anything for the acetone either... so I would wait for another day and other coins.

Personally, I've never messed with any of this stuff.

Thanks you guys very much for all the good advice. I can't even begin to tell you how much I have learned on CT. I am taking your advice here to heart and I am NOT going to dip these coins that I pictured. I believe you when you say that it will most likely not change what I think I am trying to accomplish by dipping them. I took the acetone back to the store I bought it from today for a refund. Maybe one day I will find something I want to dip but what I have learned from numerous posts is that, you aquire what you aquire from either a gift or a roll search etc. and it is what it is. Just accept it and leave it alone. I think by human nature we just want to try to make each coin that isn't graded or has a visual flaw to it just a little bit better. (granted some cases do call for it) I speak for myself here but if I want that particular coin to look better I just need be patient and save the money up for the quality coin I am after. Make sure before I buy from ebay or something that I have someone here take a look at it for me or have someone in the business that I trust take a look at it first. If I go and purchase it on my own, then I roll the dice on the outcome.

Let me share a story of how my day just went with some dealers in my area. I left early for work with money in pocket with a few ideas of what I would like to find today at the coin shop. I stumbled upon a coin store on my way to the one I was planning on going to. I looked at a few things just through the glass and judging by some of the grading I have seen here on the forums compared to the same coin graded there it just seemed over priced. I got there at 5 till 3pm and they closed at 3pm. They were vacuuming and closing up and I didn't even notice their hours. (that was my bad) So I quickly left and apologized. Point is, my first impression was that they seemed over priced and I doubt I will go back. I think I could do better with some people on CT or ebay to be honest. NOW comes the store I was really headed to. I go in and the cigarette smoke takes over all of the air in this place. Some guys are sitting in the back playing poker. I could not have felt more out of place. This coin store had 2 glass counters that looked like they got cleaned 3 years ago and on top of the counter was a dump bin of 2x2 coins just thrown in there. I am thinking, oh my god I have to get out of here. So the shop owner comes out from the back and greets me with cigarette in hand. (actually a really nice guy) asks me what I am looking for because he had a 6'x4' standing, beat up, black safe and "probably had what I was looking for in it". Are you kidding me? I mean, how is that a coin dealer with a walk in store? I get that he has been in business for 32 years, has his regulars etc. but all in all it was a joke.

I had some more time to kill and decided I would check a local flea market. I know what you are thinking right now probably ....but here is how that went. Ok in short, junk, junk, more junk and loud kids and junk, ( I used to love going to flea markets, no offense to anyone) but wait, just as I was leaving I noticed the glass cases up front. The expensive stuff if you will.:D There was a case of just coins all in 2x2 cards. I had some cash just burning a hole in my pocket. You have to be quick at these places too because at this particular market someone had to go get the key for you to unlock it, the place is busy as all get out, then they stand there and stare at you while you are trying to make a lightning fast grade in your head, do the math, and think of things you know and have learned etc. lol unbelievable.... I should have just walked away with nothing but here is what I bought .

I am a big boy I can take it. Please grade it and guess what I payed. Be honest! It's Ok really.

The reason I felt the need to ramble on about all of this is because for me this little trip today has helped me narrow down what I will be doing in the future as far as shopping, listening to intelligent peoples advice and talking to people that I feel I can trust even though we may never meet face to face. Honesty goes a long way with me. Thanks again everyone!

For you acetone guys, he is the the dispenser that I use, a vented squeeze inert plastic bottle. We use acetone by the drum at work, so my supply is free, but the dispenser is very handy and safe, just dont keep in near your water heater:)

To me, it looks VF, cleaned with a couple of significant dings-- $5-$6?

It could be I suppose but I didn't think someone would say it was cleaned... hmm, I am a total noob though. I took another set of pictures cuz the flash almost makes it look polished on the originals and its far from that. :smile

I do not think it looks to have been harshly cleaned either.

My bad! I only looked at the first 2 images, which were very bright, and thought I saw some hairlines. Coin looks much better in last pair of photos- cleaned comment retracted!

Not really a good thing to suggest since there are numerous younger individuals here without proper chemical training.
    Back to your comments.
    3. Acetone could not dissolve the inner lining of a can. You should check the canning companies that produce cans for such chemicals. They are lined and as hard to believe as it may be but manufacturers are not perfect. Numerous cans are discarded due to imperfections in the processes. The deco machines are very overworked in most Crown, Cork and Seal organizations.
    4. All glass is not the same and not always compatible with Acetone. And water is also known as the universal solvent for reason. Many years ago a scientist attempted to make the most perfect water. Today that is in a jar in a museum and it is all clouded up due to that water disolving some of the Silicon Dioxide. Many glass products are excessively different.
    6. I used to teach chem in college and we never had Acetone in plastic. Where did you go to school? I would like to check them.
    8. The reason for a distilled water rinse is if the Acetone is left to evaporate, any substances it dissolved would be left as a residue on the coin.
Again remember that the average person is not familiar with possible chemical reactions and volitility so you have to warn them continuously.

ksparrow: After reading your post about those coin stores I would think you would have suspected all that as an omen to go home.
