I tried using google translate app on my phone but it seems incapable of recognizing anything. is there another app that is better for identifying a foreign language?

The lettering is Arabic. Pretty sure the coin is Ottoman. That's a good place to start.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

The date is AH 1308, which would be 1890-1891 AD

    Wow. Good find.

Looks to be the slightly more common torch privy mark, and in that condition is probably worth about $10.

how did you find that so quickly? I find myself finally having enough time to try to find out what all this is

Been collecting since grade school. I had R.S. Yeoman's Catalog of Modern World Coins memorized as I tried to get at least one coin from every country listed.

Searching this on numista will narrow down options: 1308 5

That's a website I don't use as often as I should. I knew the 1308 part, but I missed the significance of the 5 initially. I was trying to puzzle out what 3*5 was supposed to mean....

I use it almost exclusively :) usually, I search the two dates at once (like 1308 1890) and it narrows down to only countries who use both dates.

You can go in and do an advanced search of all kinds of things. Dates and denomination significantly reduce results. Knowing the mm also really helps when you're unsure of the date.
