    Based on those photos, you have an MS63-MS64 1940-D Jefferson Nickel without full steps. Unfortunately, Jeffersons are really only worth money in the gem grades and the 40-D is a very common date that doesn't really garner much value unless it is premium gem with full steps. Your coin is worth about $5.

    Given the fact that you found it in circulation and the look of the last photo, my guess is that there is some high point wear and the coin is likely AU58.

    It doesn’t change the value much and the coin is what it is, a nice album filler.

    I agree with Lehigh - AU58. The heavier nicks are indicative of bag damage on an MS coin but the surface abbrasions are indicative of time spent in circulation (albeit light). This was likely a coin from someone's album that was liberated and sent back to the wild (that probably explains the toning you mentioned). But a fine find in circulation and it's now protected.
