I don't remember how I came into possession of this coin, it seems to have just appeared. Sorry for the lesser quality of the photos. Thanks for any information you can provide.
Looks like a French medal of some type. Maybe a club, as it has fraternity on it I think. Not in my wheelhouse for sure.
With the end of WWI the French franc dropped precipitously in value and the old 10 centimes coin in bronze that was a similar size to the then British penny, was dramatically downsized
A large "C" with the "MES" inside of it was a common abbreviation on French coinage for the (much longer) CENTIMES. Chris
Don't worry Joe, if it wasn't for me inheriting a 10 centime coin like that, I wouldn't have known either.
What's wrong with that? A little bit of controversy shouldn't offend anyone, and if it does, maybe they should be in a day care center. By the way @rickmp , the "RF" stands for Republique Francaise. Chris
France, 1918, 10 centimes, 2016 Krause catalog number KM#866a, metal-copper-nickel, mintage-30,605,000 grade/value VF20-$0.50 XF40-$1.00 MS60-$3.50MS-63-$6.50 yours looks VF-XF yours is a very common coin with a mintage that high.
Thanks Chris, did I at least get the word fraternity correct ? If so, I find it strange for that to be shown prominently on an actual coin.
I'm glad the mystery has been solved but blurry pics are bad for the eyes and I block them with Adblock Plus on here when they appear.
I appreciate your ignoring my pics, and I apologized for the quality in my OP, but why did you even bother to post here?
I'll bet there is not one person here except for me that cares what you do, and that's only because posts like this that add nothing to a thread make me .
Liberty, equality and fraternity are the French national values (national slogan?) It's fraternity as in brotherhood.
I'm trying to think of a single french coin other than this one that has "centimes" written that way. I can't think of one.
