My first impression is PMD, but I'm open to more of an explanation or should I say, a better one .

Looks like damage after it was minted.
That's no mint error of any kind.

Yeah, it looks like damage done while in circulation.

I will add another to the damaged collumn.
    PMD.

    Well, just to be different:

    Look carefully at the obverse.

There is no apparent damage, of any kind.
If this was damaged PMD, then there should be some evidence to the obverse.

    still thinking.

Unless it was struck while on a very thick piece of leather.

Clear in focus pictures would be helpful. Maybe @SenibleSal66 can help us out by posting his CT famous phone camera coin photography set up?

That would be the deepest strike through I’ve seen on a coin, just not sure it’s a strike through. The photos get blurry fast when I enlarge. Please provide a few clearer photos of both sides. You don’t need a lot of them but you do need clear ones.

yeah, but if you look at the rim near the right outer indentation, you can see the rim pushed out outside of the bounds of a collar.

Also on the left looks to be pivoted so the coin could have been slightly elongated.
This is where a picture from straight above (not kinda or somewhat but straight above) would help.

could have been struck or compressed on anything that would be slightly softer than the coin metal itself.

to me .. clearly PMD ... IMHO

Looks to me like it was ground away. If it had been a strike through, I wouldn't expect to see the copper layer exposed. If it had been a planchet defect, we'd see weakness on the obverse in that area. The perpendicular striations look like what you'd get from a spinning tool.

    Definitely worth a double-take, though!

@Kennyeva$$$ - Jeff offers a plausible explanation. As with the others, this looks like damage by someone with a penchant for hurting coins. But it is something that would certainly grab a collector's attention.
