    Okay, I'm in => I just bought I Claudius ($30)

Contains the original, uncut 13-part epic in a specially packaged collector's set. Follow the lives and stories of the last of the Roman emperors, as they ruthlessly weild their power through murder and debauchery. The tales are witnessed and related by Claudius, whose physical handicaps protected him from assassination by Caligula, only to become a corrupt emperor himself.

I just ordered it on Netflix since it's been years since I last saw it.

US Netlix ... sadly, it isn't on its sister-network, Canadian Netflix (we just have old Lucy re-runs and polar bear out-takes)

... anyway, $30 sounded reasonable enough for me (I'll watch it a couple of times and then merely place it on the shelf with my coin books) ... it costs more than $30 to take my wife and I to an actual movie theatre nowadays!!

Hey you've sold me. I'm in for $30. Can't wait to watch them.

That's what I love about this forum and the ancient collectors here in particular; post a coin and likely as not you'll get some recommendations that expand your knowledge base on the subject and add to the appreciation of the hobby that much more.

Should someone mention that there is more than one version of I Claudius out there. I assume the one Steve bought was the Anniversary edition which Amazon has for $33.77 US and which gets good reviews. There are older discs including edits down to what fits on a disk which, reading between the lines on Amazon reviews, should be avoided.

I got a kick out of a review that mentioned that the DVD shows problems with the original no one suspected in 1976 because back then we all had lousy little TV's. Now with DVD and 65" screens (I have 32" and I'm a cheapskate) you can see things like the latex masks they used for makeup back then. On a 19" fuzzy TV, it looked like skin; now - maybe not so much.

To make this post coin related: Compare the above situation to the complaints we see here sometimes when a coin arrives that was ordered from a Smartphone but looks lousy in hand. When I bid on a coin I see it at at least ten times life size but some of us think of a 4" screen as big.

Well, I've just finished the 9th espisode of my I Claudius box-set ... there are 13 episodes and I'm merely taking a brief break before diving back into this series!!

Best $30 I've spent in a long time ... to my surprise, my wife has gradually become interested as well (she started-out teasing me and calling me a coin-nerd ... but after sitting with me and watching every now and then, she's now as anxious as myself to get back on the couch and finish watching the last 4 episodes!!)

=> awesome => thanks for recommending!!

I just passed on a coin purportedly with the bust of Livia from Macedonia. This portrait looked a lot like the actress who played that part in this series.

Yah, I hated Livia (really well cast), which oddly made me "really" want one of her coins!!

=> she is rated quite high on the RIC-II rarity-list (137th, I think?) ... the book is currently upstairs on the coffee table in front of our TV (yup, I've been flipping-through the book in an attempt to keep myself in the loop regarding who is who and which of their coins are super cool) ...

Yup, it's good times in Roman Coin-Land!!

Are you talking about "Rome"? If so, I found it very entertaining but I can't say it really followed history per se.

It's more the story of two legionnaires and their exploits as they weave their way through a loosely based historical fiction account of Julius Ceasar's conquest of Gaul, the transition from Republic to Empire and the rise of Octavian/Augustus.

It's fun to watch, the main characters are very well developed, but the major historical figures are more bit players as the plot mostly revolves around the two legionnaires Titus Pullo, and Lucius Varinus.

Nonetheless it gets a big thumbs up from RaceBannon. Rent or buy the DVD, well worth it.

I think my favourite line from I Claudius is from Augustus and I am paraphrasing but he says something a long the lines of 'Is there anyone in this city than my daughter has not slept with' in regards to Julia. I remember getting an odd look from my gf while I was giggling to myself since I was watching it on my laptop with headphones on.
