Here’s my newest piece of California Gold. Graded by NGC as MS-62. It’s dated 1855/4 Octagon Liberty 1:4th Dollar. A nice piece with minting issues along the rim. I just couldn’t pass this one up. In other words, it’s a gold quarter. I have all of the original paperwork on this coin.
That is very cool Dave. If a fellow didn’t have an understanding of California gold, one would think those are counterfeit. Very cool addition.
Minted from gold found in California during the gold rush days. The Red Book lists them. I don’t collect them but I do but the ones that appeal to me.
I like the first period California gold coins as they were actually used in commerce. Personally I only buy them when they are slabbed as there are lots of counterfeits around. This is one of mine. BG 109, MS-63,
I am curious as to where that number for the mintage came from. My most recent copy of the Red Book (2024) states on page 422 that there were an estimated 35,000 coins minted and that there were 570 varieties. A total mintage of 35,000 seems too low given that PCGS has graded over 29,000 and NGC has graded over 11,000. Establishing mintage figures will be difficult as these coins were produced privately by a number of different die makers and I imagine that without access to their records any mintage figures will be an educated guess.
