Congratulations for that handsome Macrinus! I don´t have one from Antioch yet... There are also rare coins with an intermediate beard, such as my avatar Sestertius (I´ve shown this many times, but I love it): IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG Laureate and cuirassed bust right, featuring a medium beard, from the front PONTIF MAX TR P COS PP S C Felicitas standing facing, head left, long caduceus in right hand, cornucopia in left hand, drapery over left arm Sestertius, Rome, 1.Oct.-31.Dec.217 20,51 gr, 32,10 mm RIC IV 139, Cohen 66, Sear 7386, Clay ("The Roman Coinage of Macrinus and Diadumenian") Sestertius obverse die Nr.2 and reverse Nr.42 (this coin) ex Prince Waldeck Collection, Auction Münzhandlung Basel 3, 1935 (Lot 730)
My only Macrinus, with a short beard (posted on CT before). I've read somewhere - not sure whether it's true or not - that Macrinus tried to copy his more illustrious predecessors Marcus Aureliusand Septimus Severus who, with their luxuriant flowing hair would probably have been a very suitable candidates for the Luxeriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists, had the IG-Nobel prize existed in those days. Anyway, during his short reign of 14 months, his beard managed to grow to enviable length, but despite that, he was still executed, and his decapitated head (with beard?) sent to Elagabalus. Obv: IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, bust of Macrinus, laureate, cropped beard, cuirassed to the right. Rev: SALVS PVBLICA, Salus, draped, seated left on throne with high back, feeding out of patera in right hand snake coiled round altar and holding sceptre in left hand Weight 2.45 g, diameter 19mm Small flan break in the "A" of "AVG"(obv) and "S" of "SALVS" (rev). RIC 86 (?)
ancient times, Nice Tet of Macrinus , & many other fine coins posted on this thread ! The full name of Macrinus is quite a mouth-full isn't it ? I've posted the coin below a number of times but it seem appropriate to post it here too .
