    Brief history of Macrinus
Macrinus was Praetorian prefect to Caracalla, Emperor (211-April 8,217). On a campaign in the Parthian Empire, Caracalla was assassinated in 217 AD. By April 11, 217, Macrinus proclaimed himself Emperor of Rome and reigned with his son Diadumenianus. Macrinus Aunt, Julia Maesa encourage her grandson Elagabalus, to over throw Macrinus. At the battle of Antioch, June 218 AD, Macrinus was defeated and later executed in Cappadocia. Later Diadumenianus was captured and executed. Elagabalus be came Emperor 218-222 AD

Neat coins, @ancient times , and informative write-up! I love the history of the Severan period.

Here are some Macrinus coins. You'll see his portrait comes in both short beard (such as yours) and long beard varieties.

Congratulations for that handsome Macrinus! I don´t have one from Antioch yet...

There are also rare coins with an intermediate beard, such as my avatar Sestertius
(I´ve shown this many times, but I love it):

My only Macrinus, with a short beard (posted on CT before). I've read somewhere - not sure whether it's true or not - that Macrinus tried to copy his more illustrious predecessors Marcus Aureliusand Septimus Severus who, with their luxuriant flowing hair would probably have been a very suitable candidates for the Luxeriant Flowing Hair Club for Scientists, had the IG-Nobel prize existed in those days. Anyway, during his short reign of 14 months, his beard managed to grow to enviable length, but despite that, he was still executed, and his decapitated head (with beard?) sent to Elagabalus.
