Gold is insanely hard to get at that grade level and really any grade level . The 65+ with a gold would likely outsell the 67+ with the green. Out of the entire business strike run for Morgans they've given out 114 gold at MS 65 and 10 at MS 66 with none higher
The coin first sold at the lower grade (65+). Some might have been aware of the lower grade when it hit the market again, but it would not necessarily have been easy to find unless one checked for sales on multiple venues of various grades (and 1881-S being a common date with many examples graded would make it even more difficult). As for the book recommendation, I'd suggest starting a new thread to get ideas from more people. This is one option for a basic guide: https://www.amazon.com/Guide-Morgan-Silver-Dollars-Official/dp/0794836852
It shouldn't matter if it's hard to get or not. It doesn't make sense that it was a green CAC at 65+ and green CAC at 67+, especially considering both coins were slabbed within a relatively short time of each other (both of those holders are from no earlier than 2015 and both auctions are from 2016).
Makes perfect sense and you seemed to have missed the point. A 65+ toner with gold would have sent that price to the moon. Green doesn't mean something can't upgrade, gold is basically a lock upgrade and usually significantly. The golds are few and far between and seeing that doesn't surprise me at all with how few coins get gold
I didn't miss any point. A 65+ to 67+ is a significant upgrade. How is a coin both A or B quality for the 65 grade and A or B quality for the 67 grade? And I don't recall seeing any guidelines that state a coin cannot get a Gold Sticker due to it sending the price to the moon.
Easy elite/undergraded for 65 quality for 67. And you won't find any either that state that just because a coin should upgrade it has to get a gold sticker. Gold stickers are as rare as they are for a reason
Where exactly is that stated from CAC? I'd like to see something that isn't just speculation. If anything, this is one quote that I have found: What kind of coin gets a CAC gold sticker? CAC founder John Albanese describes it as a coin that could “easily green sticker at the next highest grade level.” https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2013/01/mysterious-cac-gold-stickers.all.html The coin in question received a green at 2 points above the prior grade, so according to John Albanese, it qualifies as a coin that should get the gold.
That's 99 percent of the criticisms of them though and plenty of that as been said against them in this thread. The gold sticker is extremely extremely rare, less than 1 percent of what they actually sticker rare. That's all that we can say for sure. The rest is just about experience with them as they don't flat out define a gold sticker, you can feel free to call and ask them this week if you want. It's always been clear though that green doesn't mean maxed out, and gold means exceptional which very likely has an even stricter eye appeal factor like PCGS does with + grades
Where are you getting numbers like it's "99 percent of the criticisms of them" Again that is just speculation. Let's not put misinformation out there. Gold stickers do make up a small percentage of all stickers. So they are fairly rare. But the facts are that John Albanese himself describes it as a coin that could “easily green sticker at the next highest grade level.” The coin green stickered at two grades higher. Somewhere there is an inconsistency.
That's what I've been fighting against but I know it's a losing battle when it comes to CAC Much smaller than small. And he said it was guaranteed gold for that where? I know the quote it was a small one from 6 years ago when people without experience didn't understand why the gold stickers were bringing big prices. Show me where it is stated something has to get a gold for what they think should be an upgrade. After-all we are concerned about misinformation right? A simple look through the gold population report will paint a good picture of it and how elite it is on expensive coins if someone wanted to take the time.
I quoted directly from Coin World (and provided the link) for a description of the gold sticker from John Albanese. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2013/01/mysterious-cac-gold-stickers.all.html All I'm seeing from your posts are feelings and speculation. Your rebuttals are hilarious too. "Much smaller than small" as a reply to "Gold stickers do make up a small percentage of all stickers"? I understand some need to protect their reputations and their vested interests. The over the top nature of these attempts has grown stale. You can continue with your "fighting" as I will bow out of this thread.
Just my personal opinion, but I believe they're occasionally fallible: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1904-20-Li...956648?hash=item2ab48fe928:g:0fUAAOSwKfFbkCL9 I'm a strong CAC supporter/collector, but there are days for all of us. JMHO
I've always stated that everything that involves humans will never be perfect and that includes grading since as an example even space shuttles fail which have full government resources behind them. That said, the point is that some people try and discredit them or act like they know just as much based off a picture. I have no problem with legitimate disagreements, some people are very reasonable about it, other's are consistently having them. That said a disagreement though doesn't mean that CAC was necessarily wrong, and to many people have taken the position that if you disagree the other must have made a mistake or be wrong. I fully agree with you that they have made mistakes before, and they've bought things back so even they seem like they would say that. That said as mentioned the real mistakes are far far less than the I disagree they must be wrong stances so many people take. Ego is likely a driving force for some, this thread itself contains misinformation about CAC and even myself as usual when it comes to a grading topic. It is what it is. CAC nor the TPGs need me to defend them. I would prefer that readers and newer collectors have accurate information that is all
Whoops, totally got juked by the "old" pcgs holder and thought it went down 2 pts. So, hey, I was right, it was a steal at 660
