It's been just over a month since the first annual CoinTalk Coin Imperator Tournament was announced and I'm happy to say that we are finally ready to crown our new Imperator and afford him all the honors of a well deserved triumph! Before we get to that I want to take a minute to recognize all of the great members who took a chance on this new idea and helped to make this tournament a success! First up we will look to our winner’s podium and honor all of our medal earning finalist! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/an...intalk-coin-imperator-tournament-2017.293824/ THE FANTASTIC FOUR @Alegandron @zumbly @Cucumbor @Ancient Aussie THE ELITE EIGHT @stevex6 @Mikey Zee @gsimonel @IdesOfMarch01 THE SENSATIONAL SIXTEEN @dadams @Orfew @Nicholas Molinari @FitzNigel @Bing @panzerman @Parthicus @David Atherton ALEGANDRON'S TRIUMPH!! A triumph was a civil and religious ceremony that was celebrated in the ancient Roman Republic and the Roman Empire by a Roman leader who had achieved a significant military victory or completed a foreign war on behalf of the state. Often a triumphator would dedicate a monument (such as our Imperator's arch shown above) to commemorate their achievements. In Roman legendary history the first triumph was celebrated by Rome's founder Romulus after he defeated the Caeninenses. After killing the Caeninenses' King Acron in single combat, defeating their army and capturing their city Romulus made good on a promise he had made to honor Jupiter for the victory. He entered Rome triumphant and made a display of King Acron's armor for the amusement of the Romans then made an offering of it to Jupiter on the Capitoline Hill. All later triumphs would follow a similar formula of public spectacle and religious piety. Instead of showing the spoils of war I thought it would be fun to recap all the great coins that led our Imperator to victory! Probably the most famous triumph was celebrated by Julius Caesar in April of 46 BC. Caesar celebrated 4 triumphs in a single month and the wealth he displayed was so extravagant that Valleius Paterculus claims the value of it totaled 600 million sesterces. Being granted a triumph was meant as a great honor to a Roman leader as it exemplified his own personal glory as well as his devotion to the state, the people and the gods. ... however we all know that is bologna. Caesar just wanted an excuse to toss Marti Gras beads at wine tipsy Roman college girls from his fancy chariot. As part of our competition the Imperator has been asked to nominate a charity to receive a donation in his honor so without further ado. THE IMPERATOR'S CHARITY OF CHOICE IS... As of 2012 approximately 29.1 million people in the United States and 371 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes. The American Diabetes Association's goal is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The organization strives to meet this goal by; Funding research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes. Delivering services to hundreds of communities. Providing objective and credible information. Giving voice to those denied their rights due to diabetes. If you would like to learn more about this worthy charity I encourage you to visit their website at the following link; http://www.diabetes.org/?loc=logo At the beginning of the tournament I pledged $35 to the charity. In the course of the matches I upped my pledge by $15. However I have learned that as part of one of my company’s charity initiatives they will match my charitable donation to approved charities including the ADA. Curtisimo has pledged $50 x 2 @Alegandron has pledged a full $100 to the charity. @Sallent has pledged $35 Therefore as a result of the tournament and the generosity of our members we have raised a total of: $235 for the American Diabetes Association!!!! ANCIENT COIN GIVE AWAY BONUS! Because of the great participation we had in the tournament I thought it would be appropriate to offer the initial prize coin as well as the charity donation! In our new Imperator's great wisdom he has decreed that the prize coin should go to a young numismatist (18 years or younger) that is still relatively new to ancient coin collecting. With that in mind I would like to open up this thread to young numismatist to enter for a chance to win by replying to this thread by saying "I'm in." If any of you know a young numismatist who you think fits the description but is not necessarily a member of CoinTalk I invite you to nominate them in the thread below and I will send the coin to you to give to them. Our wise and noble Imperator will pick the winner from the entries and nominations at random. PLEASE PILE ON ...also please post anything to this thread that you think our new Imperator would enjoy
wow!! What a spectacular Triumph (and fantastic graphics, @Curtisimo) @Alegandron: you're a class act
What a great job and a fabulous generosity I would like to pile on with something else than just pictures of coins and just made a donation of 25 $ to the ADA Congrats to you all Q
I would like to double my donation to the ADA, to $200. My Grandson, Killion, was diagnosed with Type I diabetes a week before 2015 Christmas when he was 4 years old. Type II runs throughout my family, but Type I is a random and brutal disease, very different than Type II. Type I is especially tough on young children whom do not truly understand the impact on their lives. We worked hard to fund a Diabetes Alert Dog (D.A.D.) for him, and raised over $20,000 to purchase the trained dog, and supplies needed. After medical insurance, my Daughter and Son-In-Law still have over $600 USD in medical supplies they have to pay out each month. Killion is doing wonderful now, has accepted the disease, and is empowered to make healthy decisions in what he eats and what he does in his daily life. My daughter especially has borne a great burden, setting alarms nitely every 2 hours to test his blood and dose insulin as needed. Killion wears a insulin pod as well as a Dexcom to monitor and dose. I write this in tears, and I almost feel selfish for putting this out. Here is my Grandson, his Sister - my Granddaughter Layla, and D.A.D. Hulk SMASH at church school. Smash is with Killion all the time, and can alert Killion's sugar changes from over ONE MILE AWAY! This is one of two Pods he must wear daily, in two different locations on his body.
A few years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a Diabetic Support dog working with a young Girl Scout (Type 1). I have never before or since encountered a more impressive animal. She was identical in appearance to your Smash.
Wow, @Alegandron. That is indeed a brutal disease and a heavy load to bear for such a young person (and his family!). How does the dog detect his blood sugar changes? Is Smash wearing a monitor that alerts him when Killion's monitor gives an alarm? ... I added $50 to the donation
It is incredible how Smash does it: They select a receptive dog, that goes through various testing that would be amenable to training. Then, over a 6 months period, the Dog has various articles from Killion (clothing, stuffed animals, etc.) that he has touched. They also have to monitor the child's sugars, and send various cloth samplings that were rubbed on his skin that reflects various high, low, and mid-range sugar levels. They never have contact with the Dog during this 6 months training period. They were roughly 1,000 miles away (1500 KM). This is all done through the process of SMELL. During all of this training period, pictures and videos are sent to Killion and their family, so that they begin to "know" Smash. Killion named Hulk Smash early in the process, so that a bond starts. This bond of Dog and Child, hopefully lasts a long lifetime of the Dog. Once training is complete, the Trainer and D.A.D. fly to Killion's home, and the Trainer stays for a week to teach Killion and Family how to handle, maintain, and care for the D.A.D. It is always stressed that no one should ever pet or approach anyone's Alert Dogs when they are "on the job". This literally confused the dog, and takes them off their primary purpose to the cared-for individual. This rule is the same for Assist dogs for the Blind, for PTSD Assist Dogs, or any other affliction Assist animals. Smash is amazing: Killion was in Kindergarten when I visited them for a couple weeks while my Son-in-Law and Daughter were stationed in TX. They have a Dexcom monitor on Killion that detects blood sugars and WIFI's the data to my Daughter's iPhone. However, it is a 20 min lag in communication. Smash was on break, and was in the home which was over one mile (1.5km) from the school. Smash started pawing me, pointing, and generally making gestures of an out-of-range sugar level. We checked the monitor, and he was maintaining a steady reading. HOWEVER, 20 minutes later, the Dexcom alarmed and showed a big spike! We went to the Kindergarten, and confirmed roughly 20 minutes before, Killion had spike due to heavy activity. We tested, and confirmed. Smash SMELLED his change from over ONE MILE (1.5km) AWAY from my Grandson. WOW, amazing creatures!
Congratulations @Alegandron for a fabulous victory and to @Curtisimo for the hard work in putting this together. Even though @stevex6 sat on me in the 1st round with his Hippo I much enjoyed participating. I don't post too much and can't participate in many of the pile-on threads, since I'm still learning and building my collection slowly, but I really truly find this a wonderful place. I have done two things today to show my appreciation. and Finally became a Supporter!
Wow, a great tourament and highly worthy cause which has been at the top of my list. Diabetes is a terrible disease that sadly touched many of our lives. It to runs in my family and have lost both friends and family because of it. Thanks guys, this has been really cool and congrats to Alegandron for the win and choosing a great charity to suport.
I'm of course saddened by Killion's story and health issue, but that dog's skills are really terrific. My thoughts are with your family and you @Alegandron and thumbs up to those who raise these D.A.D. Q
i've sent in a donation to the ADA in Imperator Alegandron and Killions name. i am unable to upload the file tho for it says has no extension to do so. my thoughts and heart to you and yours Alegandron.
