Had lunch with a friend yesterday, and he always brings me coins and currency from South America for my collection. Really nice guy. He asked me, since I own several gold coins, where should he buy gold coins to own? He is not interested in numismatic value, he just wants a few coins to own as part of his overall investment strategy and in case of the zombie apocalypse (my words not his). So, where would you advise a good friend to go to buy gold?
Gold for the "zombie apocalypse" are easily bought at your local coin shops. Most have plenty of bullion coins, American Gold Eagle Coins are the best in the US. All you gotta know is the spot price and the weight and dimensions of what you're looking to buy so you don't get taken advantage of by paying to high of a premium.
I purchase gold coins from our local numismatist/dealer, he is honest, fair, and very helpful. He also shows you the daily market value of precious metals, so you can make an informed decision.
In Europe we have a number of bullion dealers selling common precious metal coins, and they usually post both the selling and buy-back price, so you would look in this case for as small a spread as possible.
So, if my learning curve isn't totally flat, the opinions seem to say...NOT from the TV advertisers (Rosland Capital, others)...?
I would recommend to a friend to first look at JMBullion.com then go to the local coin stores and seeing if they can beat those prices. Then whichever is cheaper go with that. JMB has a premium but it’s reasonable. If he’s patient and can do a check or wire transfer he can also save some money.
No. It’s just one of the best places I’ve bought from so if someone asks where to buy from I recommend them. I don’t go out of my way to recommend them.
Go on-line to the coin/bullion dealers to get a feel for the average RETAIL selling price, as well as buy-back pricing. Then comparison shop at your local coin dealer. And remember: most on-line vendors now collect sales tax, and have upped their minimum purchase requirements for "free" shipping.
YOU count gas and time agaisnt purchases?? A poor dam farmer would go broke counting his time and fuel. I can see shipping but time looking on internet counts toward purchase... I think drive to California and pick up that silver dollar now.. 2.29 gallon and chicken wings all you can eat 10.00 dollar make you hollar.
