Buying a 1916-D Mercury. Certified or not?

    Price, and to answer your first question, no, I wouldn't have it certified. I don't buy for future resale purposes, so why spend the extra money.

    I said certified or AUTHENTCATED. But sure, why worry about a cheap 1916-D being the real thing. The cheaper the better, what could go wrong?

    I can see the message boards years from now answering someone's post if his inherited 16-D is authentic. Those always go so well.

    And by then I really won’t give a crap. As for authentication, yes, I do recommend that most people do so with such a coin if unable to do so themselves. As for me, if I can’t tell the difference then to me—and my opinion is the only one that matters—it is real.

    No, I do not think this attitude should apply to most people. I personally simply don’t care what happens to my collection after I’m done with it. They can melt it down and make ashtrays if they wish.
