    Albert C. Overton studied these coins in-depth.

    In brief, some of the design elements - stars, date, legends, etc., were punched into the dies by hand, creating noticeable differences in the various dies, and subsequently in the half dollars they produced.

    Thanks for starting this informative thread and thanks to all who contributed. I would love to see more information on bust halves.
    I found The Ultimate Guide to Attributing Bust Half Dollars by Dr. Glenn R. Peterson MD to be a good read on the subject.

    Typically Overton varieties can be attributed by the naked eye. Sometimes a low power loupe (3 - 5X) comes in handy.
