And if 75 to 80 percent of the VF bust halves IN SLABS (yes, even those from the "top two") weren't cleaned as well I would probably agree with you. The fact is that nearly ALL circulated bust material--regardless of grade--has been cleaned at one time or another in its history. Prior to the late 1970s it was basically unsellable until it had been cleaned up. The only way to ever learn for oneself what amount of cleaning/damaged is "market acceptable" is to look at lots of coins--raw AND slabbed.
If the TPGs call it a VF2x/3x, the cleaning *should* still be market acceptable and the coin itself should not be damaged/bent/corroded/scratched/etc. That was my whole point. On top of that they guarantee authenticity. Quite an advantage for beginners. Just sayin'.
